Welcome to Guins 1st annual GM Roundtable...we have an unusually large group of GMs participating which should make this very interesting. Let's get this show on the road .
GMs Participating
-THE SLOUGH
- YOURKERS
- VERYSILENTONE
- CHEDDAR
#1 - In the future , what retro players are you most excited to see come into the league and why?
- THE SLOUGH - It depends on the year, always been a huge Dr. J fan, huge Stockton fan, plus can't hurt with the likes of MJ, Admiral, Akeem, Kemp, GP, mostly big on mid 80's to 90's players was my era of watching.
- Yourkers: For me its with the ones who didn't get to make their full marks on the game. Len Bias, Drazen Petrovic, and Benji Wilson. I love giving them the ability to be amazing when they didn't get to fulfill their greatness in real life. So I always try and grab them when they become avaliable.
- VERYSILENTONE - I came into version 1 of this league around 2010/2011 in real life years, so I missed most of the era of the players that I grew up watching. Version 2 started with 2019/2020 rosters and went way back for retro years and this version started with 2023/2024 rosters, but it looks like we are probably going more 80s/90s to start the retro period, which is fantastic. My first trade in the first version was to trade Kevin Garnett for Andre Miller lol. I would be looking forward to the players from around those years. The Jason Kidds, Kobe, Kevin Garnett, Jerry Stackhouse. My favorite players growing up were swingmen on the Heat, so I would love to get Eddie Jones or Jamal Mashburn. I know that is very random and they were traded for each other, but I just always loved both of those guys. As a Heat fan, I cannot answer this without mentioning DWade. Silver had him for what felt like forever in the first version of the league.
- CHEDDAR - 1. Kobe, easily. I watched basketball as a kid before Kobe started playing. But once he was in the league, it became my favorite sport to watch. His development from young cocky teen to his old age as a Dad with more understanding was fun to watch.
#2 - Out of the current Roster of Players , what player would you most want to start a Franchise with and why?
- THE SLOUGH - Its hard to go against Wemb, but not sending 8 1sts for the guy lol. I think depending on what you could add, you couldn't go wrong with Antman, Halliburton, Maxey, Joker as well.
- Yourkers: Since I have Wembanyama already I will go a different route. I will go with Cooper Flagg. I wanted him from the beginning before I got Wemb and realized I had no chance at him. He is already an elite player and still has room to grow. Odds are he will be the best player real soon.
- VERYSILENTONE - I will go with Wemby. I thought he should have won both MVP and Defensive Player of the Year last year in his age 22 season. That’s as good as it gets. You can run an outside offense with him if you have good scorers around him. You can do just about anything with him on the roster. He’s just a nightmare for other teams to gameplan around
- CHEDDAR - 2. Wemby, he is a freak of nature. He is one of the better rim protectors, one of the top rebounders, and he can shoot the ball from distance. Meaning he can pack it in on the defensive end and spread out your offensive sets. There haven't been many with his skill set. I would say Flagg has to be mentioned as well, he is still very young and is a beast.
#3 - I have been in the League full time for a little over 2 seasons , Silver does a tremendous job as do all of the other contributers , it stays very active which I love , but it seems that only about 10-12 GMs are always active or willing to talk trade..any suggestions or thoughts to help pick up activity for the GMs that are less active, or to try and fill the spots of the GM less teams?
- THE SLOUGH - I mean the game is super old and most want to join at the beginning, but it also takes a lot of activity. Some don't like the five day sims, I prefer them, however I think its just a fact that the game and age gap is getting so old, but I will always stand by Silver and this league for how he runs it. I really don't have a suggestion as I think the league is fine, only thing maybe a fantasy draft would have worked a bit better, I don't even know most of these draft classes as I stated above I'm old school, so I think that could be an issue as I don't believe a lot of gm's actually pay attention to college so the draft classes even if real, not sure people watch as much, so that could be a gap to maybe throwing in some retro a little earlier, but that is me.
- Yourkers: I really don't think there's a way to make certain gms active. Sometimes it's just how it is that they have a team and lead them to a slow death and there are ones who just don't really trade and to me that's the best way to be active is talking shop and writing articles. Shit just reading them and putting in a response is a great way to be active. But really I just think we are stuck with how some teams are.
- VERYSILENTONE - I would love to bring back some of the GMs from previous versions. There was always a good group of consistent posters and consistent GMs. Some of them could definitely be a bit controversial, but I think bringing them back could be a good thing. Hopefully, they learn their lesson and chill out a bit, but who knows with those guys. I’m on here every day. I wish I had more time. I think to a certain extent, it is just difficult. I have to prioritize other things going on in my life and cannot make as many moves as I probably should. I’ve been better about not disappearing for days like I used to, but unfortunately not talking trades as consistently as other GMs would like.
- CHEDDAR - . Honestly I am not sure there is much more we can do at this point. Pretty much every name in the league is familiar at this point, meaning we all grew up doing this. FBB is a dying breed at this point. Unless some younger guys end up coming across it and enjoy it as well. We are all getting older with much more responsibilities, we may as well enjoy it while we can.
#4 - Besides your own personal squad , which team do you think has the best core of Young players on their first contract and why?
- THE SLOUGH - I would say its probably between the Raptors and Magic and not being bias for the East, they just have some top solid talent and the wins are showing (I need both of them to get injured this year though)
- Yourkers: Washington with Flagg and Collier is hard to beat. Those 2 are epic players and lead this team to a chance to win a title. Team will be dangerous for years to come.
- VERYSILENTONE - Since you said first contract, I would go with either the Wizards or the Knicks. I think the Wizards probably get a slight edge since Collier and Flagg are their two best players and both on rookie deals. Aside from that, they have both Washingtons who both have solid potential. Knicks obviously have Wagner who is fantastic. Toohey is great for a rookie. They have four young bigs and Aristode can’t even play because he is overseas. They are loaded with young rookie contract talent.
- CHEDDAR - 4. I would go wit the Nets or the Blazers. Dybantsa looks like he will be a future star and Arenas looks like he will be a very good player as well. They did well in the most recent draft for sure. I think the Blazers have a nice young core of players who are already competitive. Sarr, Foster, Vrenz, all look good on their first contracts and Bufkin is just coming off of his rookie deal as well. They will have cap and a good 4 player core to build with plus my lotto this offseason...
#5 - What teams out of each conference could pull a suprise upset or 2 in the playoffs , or do you think it will go straight chalk come seeding time in the playoffs.?
- THE SLOUGH - I like the Pacers from the East pulling one out and the Thunder are always dangerous if he ever figures out how to run DC's out of all these year.
- Yourkers: I really feel that chalk seems like what will happen. The West is so top heavy that I don't expect anyone outside that top 3 to really make noise. East I really like the big 4 but who knows anything is possible. I just feel the top is just so strong this year.
- VERYSILENTONE - I agree with Slough and the Pacers. Haliburton will not turn the ball over. Embiid and Turner down low is tough for anyone to compete with even with the top of the East having great frontcourts.
The Knicks-Magic matchup could be interesting with Wagner against Trae Young. Wagner has had some great games against him. They split the season series. The Knicks have a lot of size to throw at Chet and the Magic are still very young. Not saying that it will happen, but Trae Young guarding Wagner is a scary proposition if that ends up being the matchup.
- CHEDDAR - 5. It looks a little chalky to me as it stands without any major injuries playing a part. I think the Pacers/Raptors matchup (if it stayed that way) would be interesting. I think the Raptors have the better overall team, but Embiid can hang with his two bigs, and Hali is a Point God. I would lean Raptors but I am thinking it would potentially go something like 6 games.
#6 - Do you think that alot of movement will happen before the trade deadline, and if so are you expecting any shocking players to be dealt during that time?
- THE SLOUGH - I don't think a lot of movement will happen to be honest. Most likely small deals as the big moves already happened and league is split between teams competing and rebuilding still. I can see next year being very interesting however.
- Yourkers: I think it will be a very silent just because the main teams are pretty set and really will only need some depth help. So unless a playoff team doesn't like why they are sitting and really wants to blow it up it's gonna be quiet.
- VERYSILENTONE - There will be some moves. The Raptors and Knicks are always looking to make a move, so there will definitely be a deal there. 76ers have already made like 5 trades this week, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see another one. There are a few players that are being shopped, so I think we will definitely see some additional movement, but I don’t know about any big moves being made.
- CHEDDAR - I really don't think any crazy moves will happen before the deadline. I have been shopping around all season and it just seems like the market isn't there, and if it is the value likely isn't. The divide is currently set and I think the teams that are looking to win have pretty much scooped up the available talent. So I do not see anything crazy happening this deadline.
#7 - Favorite go to meal lately, always fun to have a few off of the subject questions during a Roundrable.?
- THE SLOUGH - Carb heavy, but I do Jasmine Rice, Ground Beef, Chopped Jalapeno's, and Mushroom's meal prepping with broth instead of water in the rice cooker. I usually add in one of my go to hot sauces when I cook up each bowl, easy meal to make though and store for the week. Other than that, taco's are its own food group which I am a sucker for lol
- Yourkers: A Philly cheese steak panini with spicy mayo dipping sauce. It's a delish delight.
- VERYSILENTONE - I love a good burrito or some tacos. I’m going to be a bit too honest here, I don’t eat well in general. Last week, I ended up in the ER for a blood clot. I did hit someone pretty hard on a block attempt playing basketball the day before with the same arm where the clot is, so I’m hoping that is what caused it. Since then, I have been eating grilled chicken and brown rice for the last 10 days, so I’m going crazy wanting to eat some crappy food lol. I would love a burger or pizza or burrito right now. I’ve never had an issue going to the gym, but I’ve never been someone who could eat super healthy either, until the last few days. Hopefully, the clot dissolves and nothing further comes from it. I think I’ve learned my lesson and will make moderate improvements to my diet, but it will be nice to have an occasional carb/sugar loaded meal once in a while.
- CHEDDAR -Chicken Parm sub. I have been crushing those lately for some reason. I have a local restaurant that is right around the corner from where I work so I have been tearing those up for the last week or so.
#8 - Favorite College basketball and Football teams. , NFL , MLB , NHL and NBA teams.?
- THE SLOUGH - Gonzaga Bulldogs, sad they didn't get one 'Chip before the NIL, Washington Huskies as football sad they didn't get a win. For the rest of the teams; Dallas Cowboys, Seattle Mariners, Seattle Kraken, Seattle Sonics..........Since I just moved to Sac, the Kings are my temp team, but I really don't watch much NBA.
- Yourkers: College: Notre dame for football and basketball
Nfl: Green Bay Packers
MLB: Yankees but don't care much
NHL: New York Rangers
NBA: San Antonio Spurs
- VERYSILENTONE - I graduated from Florida State and Ole Miss for grad school. I watch Ole Miss games, but I’m an FSU guy all the way. It doesn’t matter what sport, I will likely watch it. I was in the Nole Zone for men’s basketball games and we made a group to attend girl’s games too, so I was always at games when I was in Tallahassee. The baseball game yesterday missed me off. The guy didn’t check his swing and it was a knee high strike anyway, so we should’ve won. Lol
For the other sports, I am from Miami, so Dolphins, Heat, Marlins and Panthers. My dad wasn’t a big sports fan growing up, but he luckily decided to watch the 1997 World Series. I was 8 years old and hooked on sports from that moment. It’s a tough realization when you find out that your teams do not win every year like they did the first time you watched sports lol. I used to watch more hockey growing up. I got away from it, but the Panthers are the best team in town, so hopefully they take care of business and win their first Stanley Cup.
- CHEDDAR - 8. If I am being completely honest, I don't really have many favorite college teams. I grew up a UNC basketball fan, but that has kind of become less interesting to me for whatever reason. Never had a favorite football team for college. NFL I am a huge Commanders fan, always have been and always will be. I saw one superbowl in my lifetime when I was like 5, since then it has been tragic. MLB, again a huge O's fan. Always have been, my favorite athlete of all time is Cal Ripken Jr. That should date me back enough. The days of Cal, Brady Anderson, Raffy Palmeiro, Roberto Alomar, Chris Hoiles, Harold Banes, etc. That is literally the team that made me the sports fan I am. Washington Capitals are my favorite Hockey team, I have grown up watching Ovi pretty much my entire childhood into adulthood. Winning the Cup in 2018 was one of the best sport memories I have had recently. Finally for the NBA, the Lakers. I know you look at this list like "How does that fit?" Well when I was young I was a huge Shaq fan when he played for the Magic, had a tiny litte jersey and all. I wasn't really a fan of the Magic though, just him. So when he left to go to the Lakers....I followed. The only time I have ever changed my devotion to a professional sports team and when I was like in middle school. From there on out I have been a big Lakers fan. Though with the passing of Kobe I really just don't enjoy the game the way I used to.
#9 - What show are you watching right now that you would recommend to the rest of the group.?
- THE SLOUGH - I just started re-watching, "Suits", Yellowstone, also big fan of Mayor of Kingston, plus Acolyte since I watch anything Star Wars. Other than that I watch Pat MacPhee daily for the most part.
- Yourkers: I haven't really been watching many shows lately I have just been playing road to the show on my xbox. Plus sports playoffs and wrestling usually win out. But I will say of you like wrestling dark side of the ring is a great show on vice to check out
- VERYSILENTONE - I guess the 3rd season of Welcome to Wrexham just wrapped up. I’ve loved watching the team come up from being awful and seeing the town come alive again. I’ve never been a huge soccer fan. I imagine if I lived in Europe that would be very different, but I always wanted to work in sports, so seeing the behind the scenes stuff and watching Ryan and Rob basically restart the team from the bottom has been fun.
Aside from that, I recently restarted Numb3rs again. I’m not someone who binge-watches a lot. I always liked Numb3rs and watched the first few seasons slowly on Netflix and then Hulu over the last 10 years. I just started season 4 on Pluto, so I’m hoping to watch the rest of the series now.
- CHEDDAR - I just watched "Under the Bridge" with my wife. Kind of eh, but has some modern tones of our current climate. I prefer more action and suspense. A weird one that I just kind of stumbled into is Fire Country, that isn't bad. But my favorite show I am currently watching is Mayor of Kingstown. That is more my style. A little action, a lot of suspense and a bit of thought provoking to figure things out
#10 - Last one, Who is the winner of the US Open for all of the golf fans here??
- THE SLOUGH - Big Tiger fan, but he just missed the cut with bad putting just now. I'm going to go one of these top three; Xander, Bryson, or Cantley (Rory is a dick and chokes lol)
- Yourkers: I know shit bout golf so give me Rory!!!
- VERYSILENTONE - I don’t follow golf that closely, but looking at the scores, it looks like Dechambeau will be tough to beat this weekend. Aside from that, I guess I’ll pick Rory just to not pick the favorite.
- CHEDDAR - Well I am a bit late to the party on this, but if it means anything I took Bryson to win on a parlay as of Friday at close. Unfortunately my other bet (three knockdowns in the Tank vs. Davis fight) did not pan out. But Bryson did barely squeak out on top with some choke-age by Rory and an excellent bunker shot by himself to seal it. It was a good tournament, Pinehurst is diabolical.
