Yeah, I guess if the question is whether he is better than Dikembe, no he isn't. I think Cassell would be up there easily in another draft. Still a really good player.

23 potential all-star caliber players in one draft is incredible.

This was my point. Feels like he’s more name recognition than anything How can he have name recognition if he wasn't good? Sam Cassell was very good for all you youngsters out there. Not a superstar, but he was great at running an offense and could knock down a shot when you needed it.

In a generational draft class he doesn’t need to be up there with the rest. He had a very long career and ugly as hell, which is why he’s most recognizable

Pace has changed in the game so much since then that his 20 and 8 prime looks like just another nice scoring guard but dude was really good and those numbers mean a whole lot different things than they do now. i pegged him just below the 4 true legends of the class, plus a 5th that is generating a ton of hype at 14 and I did put him above Mutombo but explained in my write up why. Look at the MVP vote's statlines for the year he was an MVP candidate: www.basketball-reference.com/awards/awards_2004.html#all_mvpYear before: www.basketball-reference.com/awards/awards_2003.htmlLook at J-Kidd and Nash's statlines. Guards were having a horrible time in this period if your name wasn't Kobe/AI/T-Mac or you weren't an elite ELITE shooter.

Also dude's my age that grew into the game in the late 90s, early 2000s love Sam Cassell. We remember him vividly for some reason. When I checked on MC a couple weeks ago and he asked about the league and the drafts and such, this was his reaction, unprompted:
