I took a stab at grading the top 5 trades (IMO) from the offseason and graded them based on how they worked out so far at about a quarter mark of the season. I put them in order based on how big I though they were so let me know what you think. Not trying to flame anyone here and not one got like a D. Honestly I could see why all the deals were made but some have definitely worked out better than others.
1. Thunder Get All the Suns Picks and a Sloppy Handjob For a Former #1 Overall Pick
Thunder Trade
Baba Oladotun
Wendell Carter Jr
Sidi Gueye
2032 Thunder 2nd
2033 Thunder 2nd
$500
Suns Trade:
Jaylen Brown
Aaron Rowe
Suns 2031 1st Rounder
Bucks 2031 1st Rounder
Hawks 2031 1st Rounder
Suns 2032 1st Rounder
Suns 2033 1st Rounder
Jazz 2033 1st Rounder
Grade for Thunder: A
I hate grading my own trades but given that the replacement for Baba Evan Mobley is averaging pretty much the same stats as him I would say getting 6 firsts was a good move for the Thunder here. They have by far the most picks in the league and although it looks like only the Bucks pick may be a lotto pick this year they are going to have many bites at the apple with all these picks. Baba could be a superstar or he could be a bust but as he said when he took the deal sometimes a deal comes along you don’t necessarily want to make but you just have to make it. Respect the hell out of that attitude and will be rooting for the thunder because of it.
Grade for Suns: N/A
I won’t grade my own deals but I will talk about my thinking. My thinking in this deal was that with a core of Cassell Gill Proffitt Baba I have a bunch of guys on rookie deals or about to be off rookie extensions and cap space to sign guys in the coming years. Given Baba’s pedigree as a former number 1 overall pick, age and ratings I did not think there were many players in the league short of shaq and wilt who I knew wouldn’t be traded who I would rather have. The deal came together quickly and who knows if Baba will develeop into the type of player I need him to in order to justify it but my thought was all but 3 of the picks will be conveyed this year and my hope is that I will not be bad in 2032 or 2033 which is before I will need to make financial decisions. Also looked at it as Jazz could lose Wemby and that pick could be good but historically they have been a pretty good team. We shall see, felt like it was worth the risk.
2. Mavericks Get Zion Back To American Sized Food Portions
Grizzlies Trade:
Zion Williamson
Mavs Trade:
Jaren Jackson Jr.
Steve Kerr
Mavs 2030 1st (Ended up being MAR)
Hornets 2032 1st
Mavs 2034 1st
Knicks 2034 1st
Grade for Mavericks: B-
Zion is having a good year but given that he hadn’t averaged under 26ppg in the past 4 years his average of 22ppg is a bit concerning. Especially given that he does not give you much on the defensive end. On the flip side the 14th pick turned into MAR who was projected to go earlier. Really what is fucking the Mavs right now is not Zion but fuckn Topic. That Serbian fuck is having he worsyt year of his career and taking my boy Eddie Jones down with him. I digress, but bottom line is I am sure the Mavs were looking at a lineup of Topic-Eddie-Matas-Zion-Jarrett and thinking they had a contender so I understand why they did it.
Grade for Grizzlies: A+
Love this deal for the Grizzlies. They are currently the 3 seed in the west without Zion. Used the 14th pick to get a player who could be the pg of the future and that 2032 Hornets first looks mighty juicy. They have a big offseason coming up but they are set up well to go after a big target with all of these picks in the trade market and somehow they did not really suffer in the standings. For what its worth Zions replacement Ivica Zubac is averaging 14/14 so the Grizzlies did well here.
3. Raptors Trade Canada's Best Thing Since Maple Syrup
Raptors Trade:
SGA
Blazers Trade:
Nathan Soliman
Max Christie
Pelicans 2030 1st
Knicks 2030 1st
Trailblazers 2031 1st
Raptors 2032 1st
$2000
Grade for Raptors: A-
In my opinion getting the guy picked 18th in the draft 4 1st round picks and 2000k for SGA is good business. It made less sense to me after the Jokic trade. But Mike James is averaging 17/5/8 on a minimum contract as the Raptors starting pg so what the fuck do I know. They are currently hovering around .500 but used those picks to get some good young players on their team. They have a lo of tradeable assets and one of their young guys is bound to blowup in training camp at some point. Also I would be remiss if I didn’t mention getting your own picks back is always good business.
Grade for Blazers: B
This is not necessarily an indictment on SGA as he has given hem everything they could have wanted at 24/5/9 but it was a big offseason for them with SGA, Tatum, Shaq, Lively, and Looney coming in and I am willing to bet they probably were not expecting to be 10-10 so far this season. If they can right the ship I will change my grade but right now they are the 8 seed and giving up a lotto pick in this deal would be a difficult pill to swallow. Hoping they can turn it around because they have a good team and I liked this deal at the time.
4. Celtics Say Fuck You Get off My Coast To All Their 2nd Tier Young Guys
Celtics Trade:
RJ Barrett
Doug Christie
Yuki Togashi
Jermaine O’Neal Jr
Raptors 2033 1st
Warriors Trade:
Cam Boozer
Mo Bamba
Grade for Celtics: A+
I LOVE this deal for the Celtics with a capital L. For the most part I love it because they had a lot of good young roleplayers who they could not afford to camp that they needed to figure out what to do with before they got to a point where they did not have as much value towards the end of their rookie deals. This trade accomplishes that and gets them off a Barrett contract they did not need. The Raptors 2033 1st is fine I kind of view it as just adding Carlos Boozer into this deal who is another random young guy. Cameron Boozer will probably break the league record for RPG this season and he is an excellent compliment to Asprilla on a good contract.
Grade for Warriors: A-
On the flip side personally I probably would have preferred to deal Boozer for more picks and less young players but the guys he dealt for are all guys with 2-3 years left on their rookie deals. I would love to see itzastro start Yuki Christie and JO Jr. just to see what he has but they can be used as trade chips as well (maybe help him get off the last year of Bam’s deal or he could amnesty him). I don’t hate it for Warriors I just don’t get it if they aren’t going to play the guys they got.
5. Raptors and Thunder Swap Fat Boi's
Thunder Trade:
Derick Coleman
Tracy Murray
Cole? Anthony
Max Christie
Miles Bridges,
Nets 2032 1st
Wizards 2032 1st
Raptors Trade:
DJ Burns
Julian Strawther
Thompson
$1000
Grade for Raptors: A+
I love this deal for Raptors and it is all because of Derrick Coleman. I was very close to picking him 11th overall and I think he has a chance to be an absolute stud in this league. I think if he was getting the minutes that Burns was getting right now he would probably be putting up similar stats so I love this deal to be able to get him with Tracy Murry and a couple 1sts I love for the Raptors. Again they have a lot of intriguing young talent and I think Coleman is probably my favorite.
Grade for Thunder: B-
I do love Burns but I think this was a little much to give up for him. Much like the real Thunder the current NBN version can afford to overpay a little for guys they like but I would probably rather have Coleman. I don’t think the picks will be of much value and will probably be out of the lottery but we know what Burns is at this point and I am not sure he is a difference maker for them.
