For the 6th straight year yourkers15 and I have teamed up to do Ultimate Lineups for each division. We must choose 2 players from each position and stay under the $80mil hard cap.
mine is on top, yourkers on bottom
ATLANTIC
PG Frank Baumholtz 2,795,100
PG Everett Case 4,342,356
SG Sid Tanenbaum 2,500,000
SG Richie Guerin 15,000,000
SF Cliff Hagan 12,375,000
SF Fuzzy Vandivier 4,600,000
PF Bob Pettit 13,750,000
PF Irv Rothenberg 2,000,000
C Leroy Edwards 12,500,000
C Chuck Share 10,000,000

The Atlantic has had one of the top lineups over the past few seasons, but this division hasn’t had the infusion of young talent as it’s had in the past. The previous stars that remain have since signed large contract extensions and have made it very difficult to fit a lot of them. My locks were Leroy Edwards and Cliff Hagan. The biggest decision starts off at PG. It’s extremely difficult to fit Ray Lumpp’s $24mil salary without the required young talent to fill out the roster, so I’m going with the cheap duo of Case/Baumholtz. Both have regressed this season, but are still great values on their respective contracts. At SG, Guerin has turned into an absolute stud and was the easy pick at SG once I decided against taking Lumpp. The backup spot was between Tanenbaum and Sam Jones, but ultimately the decision was made for me when I only had $100k to spare at the end. Cliff Hagan was a lock at SF. Despite his team being terrible, he’s basically mirroring his career best season from last year. The backup spot was easy and Fuzzy is really the only backup SF in that salary range that makes sense. His offense has been a big boost for Philly this year. Pettit was basically a lock at PF. His scoring and rebounding is down from last year, but he’s now averaging over 4 blocks a game. The 2nd spot was a salary punt. Irv doesn’t give you any defense and his rebounding is below average, but he’s a very good scorer. Paired with shot blockers Pettit/Edwards should mask his deficiencies. At center Leroy is arguably the best in the league. He’s a great, efficient scorer, above average rebounder and leads the league in blocks. I tried to fit Johnston into the lineup somehow, but just couldn’t fit the extra salary. Share was overrated earlier in his career and I think has been underrated as of late. He’s having by far his best rebounding season and he’s back up to 3 blocks a game. Overall this roster is average. It has some good talent like Hagan, Guerin, Pettit, and Edwards in the middle of their primes, but I would have felt a lot better about it if I was able to fit in Lumpp at PG

Edwards(12,500,000)/Williams(11,000,000)
Pettit(13,750,000)/Thiolon(5,500,000)
Hagan(12,375,000)/Baylor(13,750,000)
Tanenbaum(2,500,000)/Jones(3,447,164)
Baumholtz(2,795,100)/Martin(840,850)
Total: $78,458,114
Overview: It is not getting easier to put these teams together. Plenty of the young players have gotten paid making this difficult. For me guarantees were Edwards, Pettit, and Hagan. They are the best in the Atlantic at their positions. Williams is having a great year for the down Knicks. Thiolin is showing how good he is on defense and is paid cheaply for his services. With how I put the roster together I was able to add Baylor which to me is huge being how great he is at the most important position. Tanenbaum and Jones are two great young SGs who are paid very cheaply do to their rookie deals. Baumholtz was one of the best finds ever as he scores well and doesnt turn the ball over. The wizards found the perfect gem with him and being that I didnt have much more cash remaining I went with Martin who is doing great as a starter getting paid the minimum.

CENTRAL
PG Trae Young 15,831,666
PG Larry Costello 12,500,000
SG Miki Berkovich 2,992,571
SG Belus Smawley 2,500,000
SF Djordje Pazin 3,000,000
SF Paul Arizin 19,250,000
PF Tyler Ringgold 2,500,000
PF Willie Naulls 3,255,084
C Slim Wintermute 13,750,000
C Youssoufa Fall 1,200,000

The Central has been one of the worst divisions the past few seasons. Overall the team lacks name recognition, but has a lot of under rated players who have really raised their game this season. My auto locks were Pazin and Ringgold at their salaries. The division has a lot of good PGs. Issacs, McGuire, Davies, Costllo, SGA, and Young were all considered. I think Young is the best value of the group, after that I couldn’t afford to go with SGA or Davies. Costello has really blossomed, but I wouldn’t have any problem if someone choose McGuire or Issacs for the 2nd PG spot, I just prefer Costello at this point. At SG, Toles and Sharman just weren’t going to fit salary wise. Smawley is an outstanding G-league development story for Cleveland and is a great shooter at 51% from 3 right now. Berkovich hasn’t developed into the elite scorer yet, but has been really good defensively. Pazin has continued to develop every year and the Pistons patience with him has finally paid off. The only other SF that’s even an option in the division is Arizin. It’s always difficult to fit $20mil salary guys into these lineups no matter how good they are, but I don’t really have a choice here. Raptors and Cavs are using SGs at SF and the Bucks, Hawks, and Bulls don’t have any SF worth much. Arizin’s scoring and rebuilding are down, but his defense and efficiency remain elite. Ringgold has had an amazing season for someone on a 2.5mil contract that’s been passed around the league for much of his career. I think he’s the main reason the Pistons are currently in the #1 seed. I choose Naulls for the 2nd spot for his versatility. There wasn’t very may other options in this salary range. At Center I choose Slim over Clyde for salary reasons and then over JPB for talent reasons. Slim has really developed since being traded to Atlanta, putting up over a 21-13-3 stat line this season. The last spot was a pure punt to fit the rest of the guys in. Even at 35, Fall is good for double digit rebounds and 2+ blocks. Overall I think this would be a close battle vs the Atlantic. This lineup just has a lot of guys that aren’t “household” names quite yet.

Overview: just like the Atlantic the central has its youth getting paid and the better players contracts are getting rough. I didnt really have anyone that I made sure I had. I went with 2 homer picks in Young and Pazin because they are the reason for my turnaround and Ringgold becuase he is playing amazing for a guy getting paid 2.5 mill a year. Slim and JPB are 2 quality bigs who are playing top of the line ball. I have always been a fan of Sale and being I couldn't factor in Barksdale I had to go with him. My other SF is Arizin Arizin because there is no other SF worth putting in there so I had to figure out his 19 mill. Berkovich and Smawley are 2 of the good up and coming SGs in the league and are under 3 mill each. Lastly is DeMarco who is on the last year of his team friendly contract. He is a perfect bench PG who can score and is a legit playmaker. This wasnt so easy and next year will be really tough for sure.
