Day One of free agency is in the books, and wow was there a shocking moment. Let's take a look at the results of day one, and who won and lost.
2042 181 Warriors Sign PG Ray Lumpp for $57,750,000 over 3 years.
The Warriors had some needs and some cap space to fill those needs and they go out and get the former two-time league MVP. At the very least, he can be a good mentor to their first-round pick Pee Wee Kirkland. If they have designs of competing, he’s going to have to be a big part of their offense, and he still has the skills to get it done as he showed by going for 30/10 last season. And for only three years, whether they keep him that long or they move on from him and rebuild, it’s not a deadly contract.
Grade: A+
2042 181 Spurs Sign C Clyde Lovellette for $52,000,000 over 4 years.
The Spurs needed bigs, and they went out and got a good one at a good price. An all-star for the first time in eight years last year, he’ll bring some needed toughness inside for a team that was desperate for it if they want to stay in contention. They’ll need to sign some guys on the cheap for depth and hope for some good karma during training camp, but adding Lovellette to Nico Mannion is a good start.
Grade: A
2042 181 Supersonics Sign SG Frank Selvy for $112,500,000 over 6 years.
What a big get for the Sonics. Getting Selvy will allow the Sonics time to develop Larry Siegfried, and when the soft cap disappears after the 2043 season, if Siegfried is ready to jump into the starting lineup, Selvy’s contract isn’t exorbitant enough that he can’t be dealt. They’ve still got a few million to go get some big man depth, but I love this signing for the Sonics.

2042 181 Cavaliers Sign SG Jalen Green for $93,750,000 over 6 years.
WOW. Green spurns the Jazz’ seven-year Bird max for the Cavs’ six-year max deal. First, they get the lotto luck jumping from 2 to 1 to get John Havlicek, now they get lucky and get Green on the six-year max ahead of the Jazz. They’re still going to need some pieces to get back into contention, but having a solid building block of Havlicek and Green is a really good start.
Grade: A++
2042 181 Clippers Sign PG Dick Groat for $28,000,000 over 4 years.
I wonder if I had offered $8 million for one year instead of $6 million if he would have joined us. In any event, they signed two point guards in Groat and John Beckman (see below). I like the Groat signing more because he gives the Clippers much better defense with the same offensive skill set.
Grade: A-
2042 181 Raptors Sign PG Everett Case for $15,000,000 over 2 years.
The Raptors had to bring back Everett Case if they wanted to stay in contention, because an MLE point guard probably won’t get the job done. And they got their Case solved on just a two-year deal (another just miss for the Mavs, as we offered 1/$7 million). Toronto bought themselves another year of playoff basketball bringing him back. He’s a perfect fit for their offense.
Grade: A
2042 181 Hawks Sign SG Manuel Raga for $14,000,000 over one year.
I’m not surprised that Raga returned to the Hawks. What I am surprised about is that he only signed a one-year deal. I would have thought the Hawks would sign him for a couple of years at least, but they have a good nucleus to make another run at a playoff spot. It’ll be interesting to see what John does to fill the rest of the Hawks roster, but a one-year risk for Raga isn’t bad. If the team struggles out of the gate, he can certainly be flipped for some future assets.
Grade: A-
2042 181 Timberwolves Sign PG Slater Martin for $10,000,000 over 2 years.
At first glance, I wondered why the Wolves went for Martin, but after looking at things, it was a smart move to get a backup point guard now at a decent price before they hit the soft cap. They can still go get some players and try to make another run at getting back to the Finals.
Grade: B
2042 181 Warriors Sign SF Zoran Paunovic for $110,250,000 over 7 years.
The Warriors’ other big signing on Day 1 of free agency, he goes seven years at a very manageable straight salary. He hasn’t made an All-Star team yet, but I think it’s a matter of time, and keeping someone who averages 24/9 on the wing will help bring them back to prominence and into playoff contention. The team still has holes to fill after day 1, but the Warriors have had a great start to free agency.
Grade: A
2042 181 Suns Sign SF Oscar Furlong for $4,500,000 over one year.
The Suns getting Furlong at an MLE this early in free agency is probably one of the steals of free agency thus far. Furlong gives the Suns a scorer off the bench, which is something this team sorely needed, and it isn’t a huge drop-off when they have to give Jalen Johnson a rest. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Furlong adapted so that he can back up Sharman either. A good get for the Suns.
Grade: A-
2042 181 Clippers Sign PG John Beckman for $9,200,000 over 2 years.
I’m not a huge fan of the Beckman signing, and I don’t think PJ is either after finding out he got Groat as well as Beckman. I expect he will end up getting dealt before the season starts, as he won’t get all that much playing time. It’s not that Beckman would have been a bad signing – IF he was the only PG the Clippers got. The nice thing is that Beckman isn’t expensive enough that he can’t be easily dealt.
Grade: C+
2042 181 Timberwolves Sign PF Vern Gardner for $6,000,000 over 2 years.
Another value signing for the Western Conference champs. As of now he’s penciled in as a starter (because he’s the only big man the Wolves have), but I’m not sure he will end up the starter when the season starts. For the salary he’s getting, it’s a good move.
Grade: B
2042 181 Nuggets Sign SG Willy Steveniers for $4,500,000 over one year.
I’m not sure that Steveniers was the top pick for the Nuggets to sign an MLE deal, but he fills a need. He won’t be a big part of the Nuggets’ offense, and his D potential at just 25 years old is scary, but he can be useful. If the Nuggets struggle early, he could be a player that gets moved for some cash or a mid-to-late first round pick.
Grade: C-
2042 181 Raptors Sign C Janis Krumins for $15,000,000 over 3 years.
For the role that Krumins is going to play in Toronto, this isn’t a bad contract. He gives the dinosaurs some beef in the middle to clean up the glass and get some blocked shots. Krumins definitely won’t be asked to carry the offense, nor do the Raptors need him to do so. He’ll do exactly what he’s asked – get rebounds and block shots.
Grade: B
2042 181 76ers Sign C Larry Foust for $5,400,000 over one year.
The Sixers bring back Foust for some depth in the middle. He’ll score a few points off the bench and get some rebounds, and the Sixers won’t need him to do anything more. He won’t hurt them either if he’s thrust into the lineup because of an injury either.
Grade: B
2042 181 Trailblazers Sign C Ricardo Duarte for $4,500,000 over one year.
The Blazers are the first team that can say they are done in free agency (barring a trade), as Duarte fills their roster. If they can keep him away from the three-point line, he’ll provide some good bench value to a team that should contend out West.
