1) Who do you think had the best and worst draft?
pjclippers: Don't really pay much attention to the draft because I haven't had a lotto pick for awhile but on first glance I'd say the Cavs. Havlicek was the first overall pick for a reason and already looks to be a stud after TC. As for the worst I'd prob say the Kings. His pick of Ray Scott at 7 was a little uninspired as I thought there were at least a few better players that went after him.
jcog72: I think I had the best draft getting Havlichek. He is a game changer and I was lucky enough to land the #1 to get him. As for the worst Im going to go with the Bulls. The CPU picked two SFs after taking a SF for them last year in round 1. I dont really get that and think it hurt them for the future.
carmelo115: I think the Cavs easily had the best draft. You come away with the best player from the class that also plays a premiere position in the league. Add that on top of the entire offseason that the Cavs have had and their rebuild happened quick. It's really hard to say who had the worst draft right now. Ask me after TC later on.
spikelee14: obiously have to give this nod to the Cavs. Luck is a part of many things but to jump to one and get Havlicek. To the worst draft I mean it’s hard to ever say someone had a bad draft but I think Don and the heat pulled the trigger on the wrong SG and with guys like Richie I think he should have been moving pieces to get more picks. If you’re going to reboot then reboot.
Rog: The obvious winner is the Cavaliers, you can't get the top pick and it be an NBA legend and not be a winner. With his notes he could/should end up being a superstar in a few years. I really love the roster and Havlichek finishes it off well. As for worst draft, I'm not a fan of Earl Manigault at all. Think he got the wrong player pretty easily and think Manigault was more of a late top 10 type pick at best. Also, picked his best position already on roster.
2) What player was the best and worst signing so far in free agency?
pjclippers: I'd say the best signing so far in FA was the Cavs stealing Jalen Green away from the Jazz. He has a slight turnover problem but he has the potential to be one of the best SGs in the league over the course of that contract if he can get that under control. The worst signing was likely also by the Cavs when they signed Nicholson. He has been dying a quick death and went another -2 this season in TC so I'm not sure how much he is going to help him over the course of that contract if he doesn't retire and think he could have gotten better bigs such as Otten, Green, etc at a much cheaper price.
jcog72: I think the best signing was me getting Jalen Green to a 6 year max. Pairing him with Havlichek helps me become creative. I also really liked Dons signing of Bailey Howell. I think the worst signing is tough because there wasnt many bad moves IMO. Think there has been a lot of nice deals given out with no overpays.
carmelo115: I'm going to go away from Jalen Green as I think a lot of people will say him, so I'll go ahead and say Larry Costello on the Clippers. He's a really good PG in this league and is on a very manageable contract for the next 5 seasons. Finding a stud PG on a good deal helps balance out your team so much more. Plus he's still pretty young. As for the worst signing, I guess I'll go with Raga on the Hawks. Yes it's only a 1 year deal so not much tied into it, but you can find a SG that puts up the same numbers on a MLE type deal.
spikelee14: another easy one. Jalen green to the Cavs. Guy gets the number 1 pick and an unbelievable young SG. Watch out for the Cavs man. Ugh worst signings I’d have to say clippers with J Beck. Tough tho I see what he’s doing trying to retain but to immediately try to move him makes me weary on what he’s worth.
Rog: Obviously the pick for best signing goes to Jalen Green for the Cavaliers, so I'll go in a different direction. The Warriors signed a 25 year old, 24 point, 9 rebound small forward for 7 years on a deal that never increases. Not only did he get his best player back, he also set himself up spectacularly at the most important position in the league as we transition into a tougher cap environment. Insane. As for the worst, have to go with the Hawks and Raga, who gets a contract he has never earned. I also don't think there were many bad signings, so it was rough. Not a huge fan of the Selvy signing for the Sonics given the length and age, but its not terrible.
3) What team has had the best and worst free agency so far?
pjclippers: I'd say that the best FA was likely the Warriors. They added a solid PG in Lumpp (although he is getting up there in age) and managed to sign Zoran back as well. I also like what I did in cutting the final year off Calder's salary and they resigning him almost $10 mil cheaper for a few years in FA and adding a top PG in Costello back dirt cheap as well. The worst FA period was likely the Jazz as they lost Jalen Green in FA when they could have used the Offer He Can't Refuse on him and then didn't end up signing anyone during the entire period.
jcog72: Best FA might go to me. I was able to get Jalen Green and Jayden Nicholson. Two guys that are immediate starters for me. As for worst, might have to say the Jazz, sucks that Zheld had to lose out on his stud prospect and it moved that team deeper into a rebuild.
carmelo115: I really like the Cavs free agency. Getting Jalen Green and then Jayden Nicholson puts them in prime position to get back into competing quickly. I wouldn't be surprised if they flip an asset like Havlicek or Kicanovic for a stud player at center or point guard. Worst free agency has to be the Jazz. Losing out on Green after offering him a 7 year max deal is heartbreaking. Same thing happened to me a while back with Milos and you're forced to go into rebuild mode unfortunately.
spikelee14: Cavs no question getting a stud off his rookie contract is huge move for his rebuild. Worst FA I’m not gunna answer. Everybody picks guys to help there team and until we see them on the court you never really know what is right or wrong. I would say the teams that don’t offer to retain players like myself with Groat should get nominated but then again think he was walking regardless.
Rog: I'm actually surprised everyone is saying the Cavs, when the Warriors transitioned from struggling to be a playoff team, winning 37 games and finishing 3 games out of the 8 seed last year, to a team that now fields a legit superstar former MVP in Ray Lumpp and actual depth. I think they are now a 45+ win team and are actual contenders for GMOTY, maybe in the West but we'll see. Worst is a toss up between the Rockets, who have done nothing of note for nearly a decade. They are terrible and didn't send bids for some sort of protest to not do a trade that fucks the league when he leaves. And the Jazz, who lost their franchise piece, but now have a legend of GM ready to push them to the next level.
4) What are your thoughts on the new cap rules coming?
pjclippers: I kind of like the rules that are in place but it will be interesting to see what will happen under the new rules. Will be harder for top guys to sign for the MLE which I like but will be harder to resign your guys when every team will have cap to bid on them instead of just a select few that have room under the cap.
jcog72: I was against it at first, but I think it will be a nice change and will help balance out the league. Everyone will be players in FA now and it will help to change things up and help more teams become competitive.
carmelo115: It really doesn't matter to me. Whatever the rules are you just need to adjust your strategies to fit them under the new system. I will miss MLE and LLE as I like them, but with no soft cap, I guess it makes no sense to have them anymore. If everyone manages their cap correctly, it should balance out the league much more, but I guess we'll see.
spikelee14: initially wasn’t a big fan. Love trying to get your young team under the cap to sign FA. It completely understand it to the point of it should get rid of tanking for the most part. Will be very interesting to see
Rog: Obviously not a fan, right? Haha, I championed this for years and I think it will end up being a good thing for the league. League has ran well for a long time, but there are flaws like any other league and hopefully this patches a few of them, but only time will really tell.
5) What is your bold prediction(s) for this upcoming season?
pjclippers: My bold prediction is that the Blazers will win the championship. I really like the Goga signing and I think Tal will take the next step and become one of the top PGs in the league.
jcog72: I will make a couple. My first one is that John Havlichek will win the ROTY and the 6th man of the year. My next prediction is that the Warriors will surprise some with his signings and compete in the West.
carmelo115: Cavs go from a bottom 3 team in the league to a top 3 team. Jcog is a great GM and he has had a very very lucky offseason with the way the draft lottery changed and him stealing Green from the Jazz. He'll make a move to get a great PG and will have an insane starting 5. I think he'll fight for the top spot in the East with the Celtics and Nets.
spikelee14: BOLD prediction I’m gunna say the rising suns squeak into the playoffs. I know this is my own statement so how is it bold but I took over this team with 18 and 19 win seasons back to back and climbed to 37 wins this year. With the young talent developing and the starting 5 coming back with Furlong off the bench think we are set to hopefully continue the upward trend
Rog: The 76ers will struggle to make the playoffs without a set of moves to address the issues they let fester for the last 2 years. I've never been a big Kiyan fan, and hes only regressed. They don't have a single player on the perimeter who is a star, or even close. Their front court is okay, but also nothing special. The 76ers looked set to compete in the East two seasons ago, now I don't like this roster at all.
