I’m going to take a look back at a couple of the old drafts to see how each pick panned out. I’ll give them a re-grade now that we have a better look at each players career. I’ll start in 2031, the Lovelette draft.
1. Toronto Raptors - Clyde Lovelette
Career Achievements:
2031 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2031 - All-Rookie Team
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2032 - Rookie Game MVP
2033 - All-Star Game Participant
2033 - All-League Third Team
2041 - All-Star Game Participant
Career stats: 35.0 MPG, 20.2 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2.6 APG, 3.3 BPG, 1.1 STPG, 2.4 TOPG, 42% FG, 79% FT, 34% 3 PT
Clyde came into the draft as the safest looking prospect on the board. He won the MVP award in the predraft camps and had only one minor flaw in his less than steller shotblocking ability. Clyde hasn’t been a terrible player, in any given year he’s a threat to make an All-Star game or All-League team, and has had a remarkably consistent career. Clyde at minimum has been a guaranteed 18/12 guy with a place on the block leaderboards. You know what you’re getting in Clyde. That being said in a draft that had as many stars as this one you’d expect a little more from a guy who came into the league with as much raw talent as Clyde did.
Grade: B
2. Brooklyn Nets - Sean MacDonald
Career Achievements:
2031 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2031 - All-Rookie Second Team
Career Stats: 18.7 MPG, 7.5 PPG, 3.5 APG, 2.6 RPG, .4 SPG, 43 FG%, 64 FT%, 38% 3 PT
Sean MacDonald came into the league as a raw great athlete with draft notes to compliment. I liked MacDonald coming into the draft, and was 2nd on Rog’s predraft rankings. For whatever reason it doesn’t look like MacDonald ever improved after his rookie year. MacDonald isn’t playable for more than a couple minutes as a 3rd stringer, and has bounced around the league accordingly. Not much use sugarcoating this one, this is the worst case scenario in your mind when picking in the top 3.
Grade: D-
3. Houston Rockets - Earl Lloyd
Career Achievements:
2031 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2031 - All-Rookie Team
Career Stats: 5.0 PPG 4.6 RPG, 0.8 APG. 0.9 BPG, 0.8 SPG 1.2 TO PG
Another one that won’t be remembered in the history books. Lloyd has never been starter quality and has been used pretty exclusively as roster filler the last 5 years. He came in with average ratings outside of A defense which is probably why he came in 5th in Rogs draft rankings. Another worst case scenario when drafting in the top 3-5.
Grade: F
4. Miami Heat - Slater Martin
Career Achievements:
2031 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2031 - All-Rookie Team
Career Stats: 11.3 PPG, 6.6 APG, 3.9 RPG, 1.5 TO PG, 44% FG, 77% FT, 38% 3PT
Slater Martin came in with some decent hype around the league. Slater made buzz as the top player on Rogs big board and some solid notes that intrigued GMs. Martin was used as mostly the starting PG on the Heat for about 8 seasons, and has bounced around as a cheap role player since then. Slater has been about the standard for average player his entire tenure in the league. Typically you expect more out of a top 5 pick, especially considering he was taken after him. Even still, getting 8 years of cheap production out of anybody has value, so it’s not the worst pick we’ve seen.
Grade: C
5. San Antonio Spurs - Oscar Schmidt
Career Achievements: 2031 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2031 - All-Rookie Second Team
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2034 - All-Star Game Participant
2034 - All-League Second Team
2035 - All-League Third Team
2036 - All-Star Game Participant
2036 - All-League Second Team
2036 - All-Defensive Second Team
2038 - All-Defensive Second Team
2039 - All-League Third Team
2039 - All-Defensive Second Team
2041 - All-League Third Team
Career Stats: 24.7 PPG, 9.4 RPG, 48% FG. 80% FT, 46% 3PT
If you compiled a list of 5 guys who’ve cumulatively had the best careers of the last 10 years, Schmidt would be on that list. Possibly the best scorer of his generation, Schmidt hasn’t played on a bad team in his career. He’s already a HoFer, he’s done almost anything you expect out of a player, he’s won 2 rings and will certainly add more by the time he’s done. It may seem like revisionist history when I say this, considering I passed on him, but I was shocked he fell to 5. To me he was the clear #2 prospect, and I only passed on him because of a minor concern on defense. Amazing pick, and arguably the best player in the draft.
Grade: A+
6. Indiana Pacers - Trae Young
Career Achievements:
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2037 - All-League Third Team
2038 - All-League Third Team
2039 - All-League Second Team
2041 - All-League Second Team
Career stats: 35.7 MPG, 20.0 PPG, 11.0 APG, 4.7 RPG, 2.1 SPG, 48% FG, 91% FT, 44 3PT %
Trae Young came in at the right time to be on everybody's radar. He was tearing it up IRL and came in top 5 on Rogs draft rankings with great ratings. Writing this up I was a little shocked at his lack of awards. He’s got a solid resume going sure, but in my mind Youngs been one of the better PGs for over a decade. Young is like Lovelette in the sense that outside of a year he played SG, you know exactly what he brings to the table. His career numbers round out perfectly at 20/11 with great %s. In the last 5 seasons he’s increased that scoring number to 25 a game. Regardless of FBBs award system Youngs been a great player for a long time and getting him at 6 is a great pick.
Grade: A
7. San Antonio Spurs - Wu Chengzhang
Career Achievements:
2035 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2040 - Slam-Dunk Contest Champion
Career Stats: 12.8 MPG, 2.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG
Wu Chengzhang came into the league with a little hype due to his notes that allowed him to gain extra camps. It didn’t work out and Wu is now an end of roster filler for the Jazz. Not much else to say here, with the great players still available Wu is another bust on the board.
Grade: F
8. Atlanta Hawks - Sergei Belov
Career Achievements:
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2038 - All-Star Game Participant
2038 - All-League First Team
2039 - All-Star Game Participant
2039 - All-League First Team
2040 - All-Star Game Participant
2040 - All-League First Team
Career Stats: 36.9 MPG, 27.4 PPG, 6.6 RPG, 4.0 APG, 47% FG, 83 FT %, 42 3PT%
Here he is, probably the steal of the draft though there are plenty of choices. Belov came into the league with really interesting notes. His notes were twofold in that there was a chance he was 5 years older, and a chance he receives extra potential at the end of his rookie deal. He didn’t get busted lying about his age and so he hit on the extra potential. Since then Belov has been one of, if not the best 2 guard in the league. Belovs headed for the HoF and along with Oscar wil be remembered as the best players from this draft and some of the best of their generation.
Grade: A+
9. Chicago Bulls - Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Career Achievements:
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
Career Stats: 33.8 MPG, 20.5 PPG, 7.6 APG, 4.9 RPG, 45% FG, 90 FT%, 40% 3PT
Shai came in as an under the radar prospect with good notes. Shai was ranked 17th in Rogs rankings as his ratings didn’t necessarily jump off the page. Shai’s really overachieved in the league so far, running the Bulls offense for over a decade now. If I was a bit surprised by Youngs awards I’m shocked at Shai’s. He’s likely being shafted by FBBs award system and being a tier below the insanely good top PGs of the last decade. Still though Shai’s been a good PG for a long time, and even though he’s overpaid now this was still a solid pickup at 9.
Grade: B+
10. Denver Nuggets - Drazen Dalipagic
Career Achievements:
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
Career Stats: 33.6 MPG, 21.3 PPG, 6.1 RPG, 1.5 APG, 48% FG, 85% FT, 46% FT
Drazen came in with good scoring ratings and notes tied to one Oscar Furlong. Within a couple seasons Drazen was averaging 20 points per and a season after that he was among the best scorers in the league at 33 a game. Since then Drazen has been one of the most consistent efficient scorers at one of the hardest positions to fill in the league. He’s another one that his lack of awards surprised me considering I’ve been a fan of his for awhile. It looks like he’s fallen just short of the top SFs for the decade. At 10 though he was the best wing left and arguably the best player.
Grade: B+
11. Dallas Mavericks - Arnie Risen
Career Achievements:
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2034 - All-Star Game Participant
Career Stats: 32.6 MPG, 16.6 PPG, 11.4 RPG, 2.8 BPG, 43% FG, 74 FT %, 32 % 3 PT.
At 11 we have another under the radar prospect with decent notes. Risen was rated the 2nd lowest of any lottery drafted player on Rogs board. Risen completely overachieved and has established himself as a solid starter in this league. Risen is like a bit of a poor mans Lovelette in the sense that any given year he could end up a top big. His resumes a little lacking but any time you get a borderline All-Star in the back end of the lotto you have to be happy.
Grade: B+
12. Milwaukee Bucks - Oscar Furlong
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
Career Stats: 20.3 MPG, 9.9 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 45% FG, 86% FT, 44 3PT%
Furlongs always been an interesting player to me. A 6’3 PF that always played more like a SG. Furlong didn’t get much playtime until his 6th season where he started to carve a niche as a cheap reliable backup. Since then he’s transferred over to SF and been a spot starter/reliable bench piece for a number of years. He’ll never be a star but Furlong is a good bench piece and the last decent player picked. Best pick possible here at 12.
Grade: B
13. Boston Celtics - Whitney Skoog
Career Achievements: None
Career Stats: None
I couldn’t find Skoog in the index. I’m going to take that as he didn’t get picked up in the offseason and deleted by the game. Regardless Skoog came into the league as an undersized SG with no notes. He did have a B+ shooting rating at the draft but he never improved and never really made a place in the league.
Grade: D-
14. Washington Bullets - Landry Shamet
Career Achievements: None
Career Stats: 14.2 MPG, 4.8 PPG, 2.2 APG, 45 % FG, 87% FT, 40% 3 PT
Shamet came in at 9th on Rogs draft board, notably ahead of Belov, Risen, and SGA. Shamet had A potential and a B+ shooting rating and good size. Shamet never got starting playing time and never looked like he really deserved it. Shamet bounced around as a 2nd/3rd string PG for a number of teams. A backup his whole career at the very least he didn’t hurt you by turning it over or with bad %s. Not great, but not many better options in retrospect.
Grade: C-
Notables outside of Lottery
29. Golden State Warriors - Robert Williams
Career Achievements: None
Career Stats: 25.0 MPG, 9.0 PPG, 8.9 RPG, 2.0 BPG, 42% FG, 58% FT
I wanted Williams a couple picks before he got drafted but I missed the pick. Williams went under the radar before eventually getting picked up by the commish. Since then he’s bounced around as a spot starter/3rd big for a number of teams. Getting a quality shot blocking big with the last pick in the draft is a great move.
Grade: A
1. Toronto Raptors - Clyde Lovelette
Career Achievements:
2031 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2031 - All-Rookie Team
2032 - All-Star Rookie Game Participant
2032 - Rookie Game MVP
2033 - All-Star Game Participant
2033 - All-League Third Team
2041 - All-Star Game Participant
Career stats: 35.0 MPG, 20.2 PPG, 11.8 RPG, 2.6 APG, 3.3 BPG, 1.1 STPG, 2.4 TOPG, 42% FG, 79% FT, 34% 3 PT

Another one that won’t be remembered in the history books. Lloyd has never been starter quality and has been used pretty exclusively as roster filler the last 5 years.
