I wanted to do a top 10 list and I think an interesting one is the best players in NBN history to every be drafted outside the lottery. I took some time to look through all the draft classes and see if anyone stood out and this is what I came up with. I guarantee I missed some people because it is a lot to go through but this is a pretty impressive list. I also noticed 2 major trends when i was looking through the list.
The first trend is that the 76ers and The Slough is by far the best GM at identifying late round talent and developing it with an amazing 4 players on this list that were drafted by him. The Nets and yourkers15 are not far behind but a lot of the nets best players were drafted in the middle of the lottery which is still an accomplishment but makes a lot of them not eligible for this list.
The second trend that is clear is that the new camping rules have made it incredibly difficult to develop a late round player into one of the leagues best. Basically every single one of these players was camped under the old rules and while it may be possible to get stars in the later part of the 1st round it is not very very difficult. That being said I am happy to hear if anyone has any ideas about people I may have missed you all know your teams better than me so feel free to comment!
1. Avery Bradley- Drafted 1st round 24th overall. Drafted by Nets (yourkers15 )
Career Stats
37.0MPG, 23.6PPG, 8.8APG, 4.7RPG, 2.2SPG, 0.3BPG, 1.8TOPG, 47.4%FG, 90.9%FT, 43.7%3P
Best Season (2021)
Jazz- 31.8PPG, 9.7APG, 5.2RPG, 2.8SPG, 0.3BPG, 2.4TOPG, 48.8%FG, 94.9%FT, 44.6%3P
Why He Is On The List
Avery Bradley is an interesting player for me. He won 2 championships earlier in his career with the nets and in his prime he was an incredible scorer averaging over 25ppg 10 times. If I remember correctly Bradley slipped in the draft somewhat surprisingly and I remember being surprised he was still available at 24. In addition to his offense he was amazing defensively averaging over 2spg during his career. The nets turned him into a stud but dealt him before he could really hit his stride. I say that because in my mind his 2021 season with the Jazz is one of the best individual seasons for a PG in league history. Averaging basically 32ppg 10apg 5rpg and 3spg on almost 50/45/95 split. He didn't win MVP that year but he probably should have. I think he is definitely in the conversation for best late round pick in league history. If not for his overall body of work definitely for best prime of career of any late round pick ever.
2. Malcolm Brogdon 2nd round 39th overall. Drafted by 76ers (The Slough )
Career Stats
37.8MPG, 27.7PPG, 5.8RPG, 4.4APG, 1.9SPG, 0.4BPG, 1.3TOPG, 46.6%FG, 93.5%FT, 41.6%3P
Best Season (2022)
Jazz- 30.3PPG, 6.1RPG, 4.6APG, 2.3SPG, 0.3BPG, 1.3TOPG, 47.2%FT, 93.5%FT, 43.2%3P
Why He Is On The List
For my money Brogdon is the best draft pick in NBN history. To get this type of production out of the 10th pick in the 2nd round can make a team a title contender for years. The 76ers had elite level production from him for years at below market price and Brogdon played a large role on many good teams in the history of the NBN. Amazingly Brogdon averaged over 27ppg for eight seasons of the 14 seasons of his career. One of my favorite things about Brogdon is that he wasn't afraid to shoot. He took a ton of shots and let the league in FG attempted a few times. He also shot a crazy efficient percentage so he wasn't shooting just for the sake of shooting. Another thing that I didn't know about Brogdon that I found when looking at his stats and ratings was that he was an insane defender and there were many years that he had an A+ rating on defense. He did not win a title but he did make the NBN hall of fame and given where he was drafted he is definitely in the discussion for the best draft pick of all time.
3. Roy Hibbert Draft Position 1st round 18th overall. Drafted by Heat (naterade )
Career Stats
34.5MPG, 13.3PPG, 13.2RPG, 1.9APG, 3.5BPG, 1.1SPG, 2.0TOPG, 40.9%FG, 77.8%FT
Best Season (2012)
Celtics- 16.1PPG, 13.5RPG, 1.8APG, 3.9BPG, 1.4SPG, 1.9TOPG, 42.4%FG, 79.3%FT
Why He Is On The List
For my money Hibbert was the best defensive big in league history. I had him on my team when I won 2 of my championships with the Celtics and he was amazing. He is probably the first in a long line of big men that naterade has drafted and turned into stars but he is probably the best out of all of them (looking at you Dino and Beugnot). He also won DPOY in 3 straight years right in the middle of his prime which is when he was winning all of his championships which can tell you how much of a difference maker he was on defense in his prime. Looking back on the years that he was in his prime was fun for me because those were my best teams but I would recommend people take a look because he averaged close to 4bpg with good FT% and FG% while doing all of the little things needed for a champ contender. He was elected to the NBN hall of fame and looking back at that draft class it is hard to see how so many players were drafted ahead of him. I will say a lot of these players on this list were products of the old camping system which allowed many late round players to be camped to hell and turn into superstars. For my money Hibbert may not be the best player on this list but he is the best pure draft steal in NBN history. I think he would turn out equally as good in the new camping system as he did in the old and you cant say that about a lot of players on this list.
4. Patrick Beverly – Drafted 2nd round 31st overall Drafted by Mavericks (lynchcats )
Career Stats
36.1MPG, 20.6PPG, 8.5APG, 5.5RPG, 2.0SPG, 0.3BPG, 2.3TOPG, 45.5%FG, 88.1%FT, 40.6%3P
Best Season (2011)
Wizards- 22.5PPG, 10.3APG, 6.5RPG, 2.8SPG, 0.2BPG, 2.8TOPG, 46.3%FG, 86.9%FT, 43.2%3P
Why He Is On The List
One of 3 players on this list who were drafted in the 2nd round. In the year he won a title he wont Playoff MVP which should show you how important he was to his team. In his prime (much like in real life) he was the best perimeter defender at PG in the league. However, unlike real life he also was one of the best offensive PGs. In his best season he averaged 23ppg 10apg and 3spg. it is ridiculous to me that he was able to have that amount of offensive production while shutting down the opposing PG. For my money it is close to a tossup between Beverly and Brogden for best 2nd round pick of all-time and while Beverly definitely did not score like Brogden you can't ignore his overall game. For his career he averaged over 20ppg 8apg 5rpg and 2spg. I think that should show how he did a little bit of everything. His highest scoring year was over 26ppg which put him at the top of the PG leader-boards, and I think his real life reputation can kind of cloud judgment on how good offensively he was for so long in the league. He is a member of the NBN hall of fame and he played 17 years in the NBN accumulating an amazing 47 triple doubles!
5. Sergey Karasev drafted 1st round 28th Overall. Drafted by Warriors (A. Silver )
Career Stats
36.6MPG, 25.4PPG, 5.0RPG, 4.0APG, 2.2SPG, 0.2BPG, 1.8TOPG, 46.9%FG, 90.3%FT, 43%3P
Best Season (2016)
Warriors- 30.7PPG, 6.1RPG, 4.1APG, 2.4SPG, 1.9TOPG, 47.3%FG, 88.6%FT, 43.7%3P
Why He Is On The List
Perhaps my favorite stat about Karasev is that he sat out his first 3 years in the league not playing a single minute then promptly got to the Warriors and never averaged below 21ppg until his last year in the league at which point he averaged 16ppg and apparently decided this was unacceptable and retired. Karasev has to be considered one of the best scorers in league history. I am not sure he was ever an elite defender but he averaged 2spg for his career and he was no slouch. At 6'8 as a SG at a time when SG was not a very deep position in the league I can make the argument that he was one of the most valuable players in the league just based on output and the position he played. He is an NBN hall of famer and was a key member of some of the Warriors best teams. Personally he was one of the most surprising players for me as I always assumed he was just a scorer (albeit one of the best in the league) but I very much underestimated just how good defensively he was.
6. Harlan Page Drafted 1st round 28th overall. Drafted by Hornets (Rog )
Career Stats
36.5MPG, 29.1PPG, 3.1RPG, 3.4APG, 1.5SPG, 0.2BPG, 1.3TOPG, 48FG%, 90%FT, 44%3P
Best Season (2034)
Mavericks- 38.7MPG, 34.5PPG, 4.1RPG, 3.7APG, 1.6SPG, 0.1BPG, 1.4TOPG, 49%FG, 89%FT, 44%3P
Why He Is On The List
Harlan Page will go down as one of the best scorers in league history. I remember when he was in his prime and consistently atop the leader-boards in scoring and FG attempts per game. He was basically the Allen Iverson of this league he scored a ton from the PG position and did it at an incredibly efficient rate but he didn't do much else averaging 3.4APG for his career from the PG position is almost as amazing as his scoring. His career high assist number was 11 which will tell you how little he looked to pass but by the same token his career high in points was 72! He wont 2 championships and the most impressive thing about him in my mind is that he was basically the number one option and an elite scorer since the moment he walked into the league. He averaged 27ppg in his first year in the league and never averaged below 30ppg for the entire time he was a starter in the league after his rookie year. Just an incredible scorer and one of the best in league history overall not just as a late round pick.
7. Isaac Humphries Drafted 1st round 26th overall. Drafted by 76ers (The Slough )
Career Stats
31.6MPG, 18.4PPG, 12.4RPG, 1.1APG, 0.6SPG, 2.1BPG, 1.3TOPG, 46%FG, 88%FT, 25%3P
Best Season (2024)
Hornets- 35.8MPG, 25.2PPG, 14.7RPG, 1.6APG, 0.8SPG, 3.1BPG, 1.9TOPG, 47FG%, 91FT%, 0%3P
Why He Is On The List
He played an amazing 19 years in the league and in his prime when he was getting starters minutes he never averaged below 13rpg. His best season of 25ppg and 15rpg with 3bpg has to be one of the best offensive and rebounding seasons by a big man ever. He was a defensive anchor for many different teams over his career and he won a championship as well during his long career. In an age when most teams have big men who are replacement level players or just fill a role of rebounding and defense Humphries will go down as one of the best late 1st steals in history and was truly a difference maker as a big man. He had almost 900! Double doubles in his career and he was an all-league first player during his prime. Humphries is a great example of the types of picks that are made late in the draft that can be the difference between a playoff team and a championship contending team.
8. Shabazz Muhammed Drafted 1st round 27th overall. Drafted by the 76ers (The Slough )
Career Stats
37.7MPG, 23.6PPG, 6.9RPG, 3.8APG, 1.5SPG, 0.4BPG, 1.5TOPG, 47.2%FG, 91.3%FT, 45.1%3P
Best Season (2022)
76ers- 28.2PPG, 6.8RPG, 4.7APG, 1.6SPG, 0.4BPG, 1.8TOPG, 50.9%FG, 86.2%FT, 51.2%3P
Why He Is On The List
I think looking up these players one of the most incredible stats I saw is that in his best season Muhammed shot over 50% from the field AND from 3. It is ridiculous to think that basically every other 3 Shabazz took that season went in. Shabazz may be one of the best if not the best shooter in league history. He also averaged 7rpg and at 1.5topg for his career was an extremely efficient player. He wont 1 championship and in his prime he was a key cog on some of the best teams in the league. i think Shabazz's legacy for me is one that shows how good a player can be with one elite level skill. He was one of the best shooters in NBN history and he made the NBN hall of fame basically on the strength of this one skill. I think the best way to illustrate this is in real life Steph Curry's career 3p% is 44% and Shabazz is 45% so he is basically a Steph Curry level shooter for the NBN.
9. Brandon Wright- Round 1 Pick 27. Drafted by Nets (yourkers15 )
Career Stats
34.3MPG, 16.7PPG, 12.5RPG, 1.3APG, 3.2BPG, 1.2SPG, 1.1TOPG, 42.5%FG, 73%FT
Best Season (2014)
Raptors- 19.7PPG, 13.6RPG, 3.5BPG, 1.4APG, 1.2SPG, 1.2TOPG, 44.5%FG, 73.2%FT
Why He Is On The List
Much like Hibbert, Brandan Wright ended up being one of the best defensive players in league history. In my opinion Hibbert was slightly better but it was closer than I thought it was going to be. Like Hibbert, Brandon Wright was named DPOY three times. He also won 1 championship. I think what really sets Wright apart is his offensive game. During his best season (championship season) he averaged basically 20ppg and 14rpg with 3.5bpg. He was part of the Nets glory years and it seemed like they were hitting on every draft pick they made. He played on some great teams and always seemed to leave his mark. He was not as efficient as Hibbert but he was every bit the defensive monster. He is also the latest drafted player ever to lead the league in rebounds. Once he started getting starters minutes he never averaged below 11rpg and he averaged a double double every year of his career as a starter. He made the NBN hall of fame and played an amazing 17 years in the league. He is one of the longest tenured and best players ever drafted in the 20s.
10. Brian Fuchs- Drafted 2nd round 30th overall Drafted by 76ers (The Slough )
Career Stats
34.6MPG, 18.2PPG, 7.5APG, 3.0RPG, 1.4SPG, 0.2BPG, 1.7TOPG, 47.8%FG, 90.4%FT, 43.3%3P.
Best Season (2013)
76ers: 25.3PPG, 10.0APG, 3.5RPG, 1.8SPG, 0.3BPG, 1.5TOPG, 47.1%FG, 93.1%FT, 40.4%3P.
Why He Is On The List
Fuchs career stats are probably the least impressive of anyone on this list but his best seasons were unbelievable. In 2013 he may have been the best player in the league (even though he didn't win MVP) 25ppg and 10apg with 1.5TOPG!! I dont wanna do the math but that is an insane assist to turnover rate. He also played 19 seasons in the league retiring at age 40. In 10 of those seasons he averaged 20ppg and really the only reason his career averages aren't higher is because of his lower stats at the beginning and end of his career. He also had amazing shooting splits that were relatively close to 50/40/90 club for his career. Not to be overlooked is the fact that he is 5'4 which is mildly hilarious and the image of this midget running circles around everyone on the court is mildly hilarious to me. Imagine how good he would have been if he wasn't the size of an elderly Puerto Rican woman.
