It wasn't a pretty draft to tank for, but there were still a few gems to be found in this class. Let us take a look at how the lotto looks after TC as well as a few potential steals outside it who weren't sent to the G-League.
1. Warriors - Dave Bing
Pre-TC: SG 19 6'3'' 180 B- B B+ C+ C A
Post-TC: SG 19 6'3'' 180 B- A- A- C+ C A
Bing was the obvious best player in this class and after TC it is easy to see why. The jump to A- outside is very nice and with his future PG eligibility he has a great chance at being one of the best at the position. He won't be too bad if he stats at SG either. I'm not worried about guard defense much and as long as he gets to 1.5 spg or so he'll be fine there. Should be interesting to see how the Warriors handle his notes.
2. Pistons - Cazzie Russell
Pre-TC: SF 19 6'5'' 220 B- B- B- C+ C+ A
Post-TC: SF 19 6'5'' 220 B- B- B- B- C+ B
While they now may have a GM, they did not at the draft. Cazzie may have been best available here anyway but the potential drop is a bit worrying. He has a solid base to work off of but it looks like he may have some turnover problems which is not good. I'm not a huge fan of his but with his notes (sacrifice the drive d!) he may become a very solid scorer who can box out which is nice at the SF position.
3. Kings - Gail Goodrich
Pre-TC: SG 20 6'1'' 170 C+ B+ B C+ D A
Post-TC: SG 20 6'1'' 170 C+ B+ B B- D- A
Meh is the best way to describe Gail's TC. The rebound drop is annoying but you were already going to have to camp him there. Don't really care about his defense jumping much but it helps with his trade value. The Kings were able to add Walt for his notes and while I don't mean to be rude, they are far from being a playoff team at this time. I have doubts it'll matter much.
4. Bulls - Jerry Sloan
Pre-TC: SG 20 6'5'' 195 C+ B- C A- C+ A
Post-TC: SG 20 6'5'' 195 C+ B C+ A- C+ B
The CPU sure loves adding guards for the Bulls it seems. Sloan is yet another young player sent to rot in Chicago. He is a player I wasn't very high on but now he'll be lucky to become a good backup. If he were able to be camped (or is saved via trade) there is some potential here for a solid starter. Someone had to go here so not much you can do about it but still a shame a top prospect is being sent to rot every year.
5. Kings - Happy Hairston
Pre-TC: PF 21 6'7'' 225 B B- C B- B A
Post-TC: PF 21 6'7'' 225 B B- C B B B
This draft was not a strong one at the top for bigs. Happy shows some potential, but the dip in scouted is worrying and he did not show much ability to block the shot in camps. He is still likely the correct pick here but it just shows how weak this draft is that a guy who needs a lot of work to even be starting caliber went top 5. His note won't be as much of an advantage on such a bad team as well.
6. Bucks - Jon McGlocklin
Pre-TC: SG 20 6'5'' 205 C A- B- C+ D+ A
Post-TC: SG 20 6'5'' 205 C- A- B- B- D+ A
Yikes. Bucks did not have a GM at the time but this pick was just bad and is even worse now after a terrible TC. C- inside for a guard is just not going to cut it and at this point I'm not sure if he is even worth camping. You're better off investing that cash in another first round pick. No positives to be found here unfortunately as much as I would like to find one.
7. 76ers - Giorgos Kolokithas**
Pre-TC: SF 21 6'7'' 210 B+ B D C C A
Post-TC: SF 21 6'7'' 210 B+ B+ D+ C C+ A
It is a little surprising Giorgos fell this far, but there were a few CPU picks and his C defense did him no favors there. We won't know how he sims for another two years but B+ B+ scoring is a nice start. The rebound jump is also clutch since he will have to be a positive there if his stats defense is not very good. Would not surprise me if he ends up the second best player from the class, but there is still risk here.
8. Lakers - Bill Bradley
Pre-TC: SF 20 6'5'' 205 C+ B- B B C A
Post-TC: SF 20 6'5'' 205 C+ B B B C B
It sure was a draft full of meh wing players. His note is neat and will likely end up being the most value he provides to his team. His rebounding needs a lot of work to become starting caliber and I am just not sure how you can fix it especially when his offense needs work as well. I just don't like drafting players who are just average at everything especially when they are in their 20s. He is worth camping but a solid backup may be his peak.
9. 76ers - Fred Hetzel
Pre-TC: PF 20 6'8'' 220 B C+ C C+ B A
Post-TC: PF 20 6'8'' 220 B B- C C+ B+ A
The top two bigs of this class look very similar. Hetzel had a decent TC with a rebound jump but would have liked to see him take that leap to B- defense. With camps he should get there so it's probably not a big deal. He didn't show much ability to block the shot in camps which is bad and he will need a lot of work there to become starting caliber. At this point a potential starter seems to be a steal.
10. Heat - Archie Clark
Pre-TC: Archie Clark. SG 19 6'2'' 175 C+ B- B B- D A
Post-TC: Archie Clark. SG 19 6'2'' 175 C+ B+ B B+ D+ B
The Heat are a team in desperate need of direction and drafting yet another SG doesn't help much with that. Archie had a strong TC at least and depending on how much potential he has left he may just be the second best guard in this class. Will he receive the camps he needs in Miami? I have my doubts. He will need some camps with his rebounding so the big jump in his outside scoring is a big help with making that easier to do.
11. Sonics - Amar Sylla
Pre-TC: C 18 6'10'' 220 C+ C+ D+ C+ B- A
Post-TC: C 18 6'10'' 220 C+ C+ C- C+ B A
Amar did not do much in TC but at only 18 you knew when drafting him that he was a few years away from contributing. In an ideal world he would be sent to the G-League but what can ya do. The Sonics needed a big and they went after the one they thought had the most potential so can't fault them for that. His lack of shot blocking of camps is a big worry though and they will need a great TC in the next two years for him to have any chance at becoming a starter.
12. Warriors - Mel Counts
Pre-TC: Mel Counts C 21 7'0'' 230 C+ B+ D- C+ B- A
Post-TC: Mel Counts C 21 7'0'' 230 C+ B+ D- C+ B- B
When your big man is below average at everything but jump shots, that is not good. He is another big who did not show much ability to block the shot in camps and with the potential drop you have to wonder if he may already be a lost cause. I had no interest in him but for any team that did they are unlikely to be turned off completely already so let's see if he can prove me wrong after some camps.
13. Wizards - Arturo Guerrero
Pre-TC: SG 19 6'4'' 185 B- A- C C C- A
Post-TC: SG 19 6'4'' 185 B- A- C C+ C- A
I was not a big fan of anybody by this point of the draft, but I was surprised to see Arturo slip considering some of the other wings that went before him. I camped him to A- outside before TC so his only movement was a jump with his defense. Like I said before I don't care much about guard defense letter grade wise but he looks better now for trades and maybe his stealing jumped so I won't complain about it. He still needs a lot of work but he should at least be a good backup in the future. Not great considering it was a tanking season but oh well.
Potential Steals Past the Lotto
17. Kings - Walt Hazzard
Pre-TC: PG 20 6'2'' 185 C+ B- B+ B C- B
Post-TC: PG 20 6'2'' 185 C+ B A- B+ C- A
The Kings only traded for Hazzard because of his note but after a very solid TC they may have lucked into a steal. A lot of PGs enter the league with iffy handles but Hazzard should be fine there. I'm not sure he has a high ceiling but he should become a very solid starter with some camps. He may even become better than Gail if all goes well. That is great value at this point in the draft.
22. Trailblazers - Kai Jones
Pre-TC: PF 20 6'10'' 200 C+ B- C- C+ B- A
Post-TC: PF 20 6'10'' 200 B- B- D+ B B- A
After I sold him Anatolly I should have known not to sell another boom or bust big to the Blazers! Kai had a very good TC and considering he was already one of the best shot blockers in this class, that two letter grade jump in defense could be huge. He may end up the best big in this class so yeah drafting him in the 20s may end up as a huge steal and the end of me selling draft picks to the Blazers.
1. Warriors - Dave Bing
