Brooklyn Nets
Most Wins: 69(1) Least Wins: 47(2) Average Wins: 58.5(1)
Playoff Appearances: 8 Conference Finals Appearances: 7 Finals Appearances: 4
Titles Won: 2 MVPs: 0 All Leaguers: 15 Best Draft Pick: SG Dick Barnett 1.15
It’s been a pretty successful decade for the Nets winning 47+ games each season, making the conference finals 7 times, the finals 4 times and winning 2 titles. They did miss the playoffs 2 seasons, but ended up finishing with the 9th seed with 47 wins both years. Their 15 All Leaguers ties with the Nuggets for 1st over the decade and shows the amount of talent they’ve had on the roster over the years. The 1st title team in 2038 was absolutely stacked and should feature 4 hall of famers as starters with PG Ray Lumpp, SG Frank Ramsey, SF George Yardley, C Goga Bitadze, and C Leroy Edwards. That team made back to back finals, but lost the 2nd season. It was a similar story for their 2nd go around, winning the title in 2044 and losing in the finals in 2045 with a core of PG Bob Cousy, SG Dick Barnett, SG Sergei Belov, SF Drazen Dalipagic, C Perry Crosswhite and C Robert Bobcroczky. The best draft pick has easily been SG Dick Barnett, who was drafted #15 and sent to the G-League, where he won MVP. 2045 was his first year as a starter after sitting behind Belov for his rookie contract and he won All-League 1st team in his first starting opportunity.
Washington Wizards
Most Wins: 61(9) Least Wins: 39(4) Average Wins: 53.4(4)
Playoff Appearances: 9 Conference Finals Appearances: 1 Finals Appearances: 1
Titles Won: 0 MVPs: 0 All Leaguers: 7 Best Draft Pick: PG Dilon Hunter 1.16
Thefirstcedi has been with the Wizards the full decade and you don’t get much more consistent than him. 48, 55, 58, 55, 57, 55, 61, 55, 39, 51 wins over the past 10 years shows that better chance than not he’s going to finish between 55 and 58 wins. He’s made the playoffs 9 times this decade with his lone miss being a year he was trying to tank. Although he’s been the definition of consistency, the Wizards haven’t been able to get over the hump yet and win a title. They’ve only advanced to the Conference Finals and Finals one time, losing to the Blazers. They’ve had 2 real iterations of the team over the past decade. The first iteration was led by scrap heap PG Frank Baumholtz with a nucleolus of Drazen Daliapagic, Bob Pettit, and Neil Johnston. The 2nd version of the team featured Drazen and Johnston along with Panagiotis Giannakis, Nikos Galis, and Perry Crosswhite. Will be interesting to see if their current rebuilt team around Hunter, SG Alain Giles and SF Dave Busschere can develop into a title team. The Wizards haven’t had many picks over the decade and GLeague star and ROY PG Dilon Hunter is really the only choice. It’s hard to tell how good he will end up being until the turnovers are fixed.
Boston Celtics
Most Wins: 66(3) Least Wins: 36(5) Average Wins: 50.1(7)
Playoff Appearances: 8 Conference Finals Appearances: 3 Finals Appearances: 2
Titles Won: 2 MVPs: 2 All Leaguers: 10 Best Draft Pick: SG BJ Boston 1.2
Naterade has been the GM the full decade, making the playoffs 8 times with 2 title teams. The Celtics made a splash acquiring Cousy in 2040 and was able to pair him with 2 other All Leaguers in Oscar Schmidt and Anfernee Simons. Those teams were very top heavy, but having those 3 in their prime proved unstoppable, winning back to back titles. The salary cap caught up to them and they had to dismantle the trio after 3 seasons. They’ve done a great job remaining competitive after that though, making the playoffs every season since. Nate’s gone a good job rebuilding/reloading on the fly and remains one of the most consistent GMs in the league. The Celtics haven’t had very many draft picks over the years as they’ve always moved them for win now pieces, but their best draft pick is easily BJ Boston who looks like he should become a top 5 SG once he finishes developing.
New York Knicks
Most Wins: 63(4) Least Wins: 23(10) Average Wins: 49.4(8)
Playoff Appearances: 8 Conference Finals Appearances: 0 Finals Appearances: 0
Titles Won: 0 MVPs: 0 All Leaguers: 5 Best Draft Pick: C Wayne Embry 1.3
The Knicks have had 3 GM’s the past decade SpikeLee, Braz, and Walker with each GM having success. There was a year gap between SpikeLee and Braz where the team spiraled to 20 and 23 wins, but have otherwise made the playoffs every season. They’ve had a few very good teams, notably the 2043 team that featured Trae Young, Kareem Queeley, Djordje Pazin and Honglin Qu that got upset in the 2nd round. The other team that I liked was Spike’s 2036 team that had Everett Case, Brooklyn Vick, Cliff Hagan, and Robert Bobroczky and won 57 games. It was not easy picking a best draft pick and there wasn’t a whole lot of choices. It was either C Wayne Embry, who has definitely disappointed in his career (he does have 2 titles though!) or SF Lee Schaefer at 1.7
Philadelphia 76ers
Most Wins: 53(18) Least Wins: 21(14) Average Wins: 37.2(18)
Playoff Appearances: 4 Conference Finals Appearances: 1 Finals Appearances: 0
Titles Won: 0 MVPs: 0 All Leaguers: 2 Best Draft Pick: PG Giancarlo Pieri 1.11
The Slough has done a lot of winning in the past in the NBN, but hasn’t done much this past decade. He’s only made the playoffs 4 times in the 2038-2041 stretch and has been lottery bound otherwise. He did make one conference finals appearance. The only real link between the 2038 and 2041 team is SG Frank Selvy. He really blossomed into one of the best SGs in the league other his stretch for the 76ers. Some other key players to his playoff teams were Kiyan Anthony, Fuzzy Vandivier, Ivo Daneu, Chuck Share, Levon Tostig, and Arnie Risen. The 76ers haven’t made the playoffs the past 4 seasons. They have some veterans and some young players who are starting to mature and will be interesting if they decide to make a push and break the lottery streak. Pieri looked like a steal when he was drafted in the late lottery after a huge TC, but he’s failed to develop further. Still getting a solid PG at the end of the lottery is a win, but not when that’s your best pick of the decade.
Miami Heat
Most Wins: 49(22) Least Wins: 20(15) Average Wins: 34.6(21)
Playoff Appearances: 3 Conference Finals Appearances: 0 Finals Appearances: 0
Titles Won: 0 MVPs: 0 All Leaguers: 3 Best Draft Pick: PG Zoran Slavnic 1.6
The Heat have failed to build a playoff team around future Hall of Fame SG Richie Guerin since 2038. Each season they continue to make half-ass free agency attempts and despite having more cash than almost every other team combined, fail to camp their young players. I’m not sure what the point of holding onto Guerin for the decade was if they weren’t going to build a team around him. It needs to be pointed out that Don took over for this team in 2037 after Walker left in 2036. Also noted that while Guerin is a sure firer HOFer, he was only camped 3 of his possible 8 times of his rookie contract by Walker. The Heat’s best team was the one that Walker left for dead in 2036 which featured Richie Guerin, Slater Martin, Kiyan Anthony, Tarik Biberovic and Leon Volasgis. Just another reason the Heat haven’t had much success is because of their failed draft picks. PG Zoran Slavnic had a breakout year in his 5th season (he wasn’t camped as a rookie), but like most of the division, it’s not good when this is your best pick when you are lottery bound 7 of the 10 seasons.
Orlando Magic
Most Wins: 48(23) Least Wins: 7 (28) Average Wins: 34.6(21)
Playoff Appearances: 4 Conference Finals Appearances: 0 Finals Appearances: 0
Titles Won: 0 MVPs: 0 All Leaguers: 4 Best Draft Pick: C Bastian Vautier 1.15
Longtime stalwart Charles left the Magic after the 2040 season and current GM mcmuslim took over just last season. Inbetween there was 2-3 GMs that didn’t pan out. I think mcmuslim has done a very good job taking over the team, despite a disappointing 2045 season in which they had a lot of injuries. The team struggled after Charles left and was basically left inactive for 2-3 seasons. In 2036 Charles bottomed out winning only 7 games. He was able to recover in 2038 and 2040 to put together a few playoff teams, the best of which featured Ray Lumpp, Kresmir Cosic, Dike Eddleman, and GLeague star Sid Tanenbaum. When mcmuslim took over in 2044 they looked to be tanking, trading away what was left in Sid and Cosic, but made a series of trades to make a playoff run ended up with a roster of Dick McGuire, Eddie Palubinskas, Zoran Pauonvic, Oscar Schmidt and Bob Ferry. It’s a toss-up to determine which team had the harder decision in the division for worst best draft pick. From what I can tell the Magic have only had 3 players who’ve really played in the NBN over the last 10 years and I’ll go with C Bastian Vautier as the best between him, PG Jim King 1.7 and SF Dave Gambee at 1.11
