When it comes to resigning a star player the Brooklyn Nets have seen the unthinkable happen as they watched Steve Francis walk away to the Charlotte Hornets. It hurt the franchise hugely as it made them go into a rebuild and have to start over. This year they had a similar predicament put right in from of them with both Josh Childress and Devin Harris were expiring. All the Nets could think about is that history could strike twice and if it did this would be even more devastating than the 1st time.
Now when you look at Childress and Harris they had similar qualities. Both have very low loyalty and greed but were big time believers and playing for a winner. So when the Nets came out the gates and started the season 2-11 they were very worried. So they went out and made moves. They went out and traded for the likes of Allen Iverson and Kenyon Martin. They also put Kwame Brown on the bench because it seemed as he was not ready to be a starter, plus he was taking too many shots away from Childress, Harris and newly acquired AI. With all these changes the Nets were able to get back on track and pull out 50 wins on the season. Going from the bottom of the east all the way up to the 5th seed.
Now the playoffs were upon us and they had to go up against a very good Wizards team. A team that always played them tough even when they were an 8th seed and took the Nets all the way to 7 games. This time was no different as the Nets and Wizards went to a game 7 as expected. This time though the Wizards came out victorious coming back from a 19 point half time lead to win by 10. It was disappointing as the Nets allowed the Wizards to come back in 2 other games when they had the lead going into the 4th quarter.
The biggest thing for the Nets though was their future. They were waiting to see if Childress and Harris would resign without going into free agency. What they find out is that yes both of them were willing to come back and be the future of the Brooklyn Nets. Childress would be coming back for 93,750,000 for 6 years. This is a contract that Childress fully deserves. He is the 2nd best SG behind Vince Carter and has the ability to over take him do to his age. On top of that he is so versatile that he played at SF and killed it there as well. He is one of the top players in the league and even a dollar under the max would of been a steal. But the biggest win comes by the hand of Devin Harris. Harris resigned for 72,656,250 over 6 years. That comes out to 12.1 mill per year and that is such a steal for a guy who would of seen the max if he hit FA. He is one of the best 2 way PGs in the league and anyone would love to have him.
With those signing the Nets know their future is bright instead of dim like last time when Francis left them high and dry. But it was a blessing in disguise as it allowed them to get these 2 great players. Now the Nets can focus on their other young up and comers in Kwame Brown and Brandon Wright. They are their future front court and will be the ones who see the money get put towards them so they can grow. Brown already looks like a solid low post player but will need to bring up his scoring as he shot a pitiful 39%. Wright who is only 19 has a bright future ahead of him. He already showed in limited time that he can shoot a nice % and block shots. That is exactly what the Nets look for in a big man and if he continues to grow the Nets will think of him as the steal of the 2006 draft.
