Slough: So Yourkers, how have you been? This NBN Reboot kind of just came out of nowhere, what are your initials thoughts? Excitement?
Did you expect this many GM's to have this must interest already, especially for a game that was what made 30 years ago?
Yourkers: Man this last year has been a world wind. Getting out of a relationship to finding my footing again. Kind of glad 2023 is coming to an end and 2024 is right around the corner.
Now onto the good stuff and nbn is back. I am all for it and have been always. Best league run by the best guy and a core group that is top of the line. I am fully excited as I missed this league when it was gone. Nothing like. Now for the team draft I am all for something new and different. I wonder how teams will be picked and what people's direction will be. So it will be fun but we all know I will be trade heavy like always.
I am not surprised that we got plenty of gms to come back. We always had a good core and all we lacked was a few spots. So some of the old timers who stepped away are back and that really fills it up real quick. So yeah not surprised at all. Silver brings us together and he will always find a way as long as he wants to.
So since this is modern time are you offended that the sonics aren't here? Are the thunder your first choice? Isn't that a dumb name for a team in Oklahoma?
Now say there was a spot open and we decided to allow the sonics back and did an expansion team, how excited would you be? How do you think that would play out? Would it be like a kid in a candy store but only choosing from the secondary chocolates?
Slough: Well if I do get the Thunder I can switch them to the Sonics I am assuming and yes fuck the Thunder, it was hilarious when KD bailed on their ass and went to the Warriors, that was like a mini sweet revenge, but they aren't even destructive like lightning, they are just a sound that doesn't do anything, its like a kitty cat behind a Wizard of Oz curtain. Stern and everyone totally fucked the city of Seattle over.
I think that it will be allowed to move back to Seattle honestly with the Thunder roster, but for the sake of the question, I would love an expansion team. It would take some time to make a roster, but based on expansions I believe you get the #2 overall in the draft and can snag some players that are not protected from other teams, like one each if I remember or some would be amnesty pick ups and see what can be done in FA.
I mean you have to say, "A kid in a candy store," so I would be like a fat kid just happy to be in the candy store. Remember, you can have all the leftovers from a start candy and make it into something completely different, change the concept, market it and its like an entirely different Chocolate to sell and gain the respect against the so called top Chocolate. Think about all the leftovers of making a candy with chocolate, take all the scraps, reheat it and mold it into say a Peanut Butter Cup and lets be honest, that is one of the best candies ever created.
Questions: So, I know you are a Spurs fan, first is Wemb the truth and how good can he become in real life? If you do end up landing the Spurs, what type of build would you give him with being a 30 year old game that references certain types of ratings based how the game was back then, how would he turn out with those type of ratings that the game garner compared to how the NBA has changed?
If you don't get the Spurs, any teams you would love to have and start with? Or would you just start fresh with trades and build up your team right away?
Yourkers: So I have been thinking bout this for sure. He has to have a very solid overall build. Which to me would look like B+ C+ C B+ B A. The kid can really do it all. I love his game and feel he gonna be the next big thing for sure. I think a B+ C+ scoring is a good starting area as he's pretty much a 20+ A game scorer all ready and you want his outside shot to have a chance just like i expect growth in that area irl. He's already a beast on defense just based off of his height but still allow growth there and same for rebounding. He isn't an elite rebounder now but he is a very solid 7-9 guy. It's really exciting again in San Antonio.
So if I miss out on the Spurs there's def interest in other teams. I love the Thunder but hate the name. There's so much talent on that roster that you could sit on it and probably win championship for years before the money becomes an issue. Plus Chet so similar to Wemb that I could live with that. Next would be the Hornets. Love me some Melo and Miller. Feel like that tandem would be unreal to build around and add Bridges who looks pretty great himself. The core looks real nice. Then there's the Pistons as I think cade Cunningham is the real deal and just needs to work on turnovers to take that next leap and lastly Brooklyn. Bridges is probably the perfect build for this game as he is an amazing scorer and defender. Add in Ben Simmons who i wonder how he will look and being a fan and one who wants to see him succeed. Plus being born and raised in Brooklyn you know I have to.
Being that we are going modern how would you like to see historic classes incorporated? Would you like them to be sprinkled here and there or start with them as our starting draft class? Who will you be looking forward to drafting once they become avaliable? Which attribute do you feel is the most important in the modern era file? Will there be anyone trying to run a true slow pace or are we looking at straight running and gunning?
Slough: I think it would need to be a mix of sprinkled in since depending on how far we go back, there wasn't a ton of players back in those retro classes back in the 50's and 60's really, plus with the way things are you can gain a range of up and coming College classes and a few years of recruiting classes that can be ranked and plugged in IRL as well. I would assume that is where it will go with, it depends if other sports are mixed in, I am indifferent on them usually, but I get it for added players and some turn out.
If we are talking about teams drafting, it really doesn't matter to me as I am just happy the league is back. Now if it is around certain players in retro classes and what is currently in College and future recruiting then it really could be a mix. I do like Edey, Dickinson, Bacot as bigmen, plus Kolek as a sweet jumpshooting PG is nice for Marquette. You have Bronny James who is interesting for the future even with the health scare, not to mention the prolific scorer from Oral 'Upset' Roberts in March Madness in Max Abmas. I watch college probably way more than many, so I follow along and will have more I will see long term. As for retro guys, love me some of the great defenders and players like Cousy, West, KAJ, Russell, Dr. J, Gervin, and the list goes on, but always guys looking forward to, then you know my guys once we get to the late 80's and 90's is my wheelhouse!
For the modern day file, I would assume some STR, Quickness, shooting, handling and rebounding with low turnovers. Its really hard to tell how the classes will be made and transition to a 30 year old game type of thing, but the STR could be interesting how players are made, especially with how the NBA has turned more into Euro style of ball. It will be interesting on the pace and focus, but generally you can run a bit more options when starting a new league vs the natural progression of all run n gun.
Questions: With the salaries so high, how do you think that will play into the league start, cap space, and hard cap? Will there be amnesties or will this be a something that will need to be discussed for say a FA bidding period type of thing so that good players don't wait out a year?
If you don't get the Spurs will you be looking to just make your own team with what you got and build off of that, maybe through the draft and rebuild? Any players you would be trying to target in retro or college? Would you risk trying to give up your entire team and future for a crazy trade for Wemb?
Yourkers: damn phone I had all this written and then boom gone lmao.
BUT I digress. I think amnesty is a must. Contracts will be unreal and most teams won't have much space. I just hope there is a little window to allow teams to trade before deciding. Brown from the celtics was mentioned as a cut candidate but he has actual value and someone might be willing to pay something to get him instead of a team losing him for nothing. Now my wonder is will we have a lux payment. Like 50 for every 10 mill instead of everyone 1 mill or something like that or nothing at all. I liked the element because it made you be active. But we will see.
Now if I don't get the Spurs I do have teams I like with players I like that I would be glad to build around and then go trade crazy like always. As far as players I would love to get guys like Petrovic, Bias, Benji Wilson, pistol(remember i traded that guy I woulder how that panned out), d-rob, bowie(bad rap), bird, cousy just to name a few. Another one would be Coleman as he wad unique for his time. As far as college i haven't payed too much attention and notre dame ain't so good so I am not invested.
About Wemb I def want him and will do what I can to get him. If I end up with a team I like I would like to add him to the core I want. If I am late in the draft fuck the players there and I will do what ever necessary to get him without hurting my future. So let's tak trade lol
Do you think I will be the first one to make an actual trade? Who are some gms you have missed keeping in contact with? With the luck of the draw do you have a year where you think the skill vs luck comes into play? In a player draft who do you see being the top 5?
Slough: I definitely think you will be one of the few gm's that likely will get a deal done first, however it does depend on the team you get. If you get your wish with the Spurs, then I don't think you will be one of the first to make a trade as I think even if you get your guy Wemb, I think you know a ton about the current roster so will evaluate a bit more since they do have other players I am sure you like as well and want to see some stats. If you aren't the Spurs I see you making some moves, but it will be interesting as there might be some GM's that wait for stats, but a solid Preseason sim to start could cause a chaos of trades in my opinion.
There are definitely some GM's I would say I miss chatting with, you included, why I reached out for this inaugural article to start. I mean, how do you go this long of a time this year, and then I see you joined and we just jump in and start chatting and making an article for fake cash in a 30+ year old game? Haha, its so funny and to be honest I would like to stay in more contact with a few even after this Reboot since for the most part it seems a lot of us have things in common. Some of the other gm's is of course Rog even though I have him on Skype, we didn't chat as much recently, Hunt is my guy being a fellow Cowboys fan, Joe-ballin is cool, along with love giving UC a hard time as well with his jedi-mind tricks of trading with gm's in the league, love to hate on that, but respect the skill . I mean there are quite a bit, MC, Dash (love that guy), Van talking some Futbol, and so many more, the OG's are amazing in a league like this.
As far as the first year, I think it will be a combination of luck and skill, but with so many veteran gm's, I will lean on skill as the ones that know the game, see how ratings play out will ultimately adapt to make a run at the first ring of 3.0. If this was a bunch of gm's that I didn't think have played for as long as the roster shows joining, then I would lean more on the luck factor, but I think its going to be epic no doubt!
With a player draft, hmm it would be quite interesting, especially with guys like Wemb in it, so you would have similar to the last Fantasy Draft where you have young accomplished players and then the top rookies at the time for gm's that wanted to make a certain team. In no order I would say based on just NBA and likely ratings; Embiid/Wemb/Joker/Doncic/Tatum or Giannis. It would definitely be interesting, but it would take a really long time and sometimes you lose activitiy on that.
Questions: Alright Yourkers, lets close this out in no better way than to start off with a ranking of top 5 gm's to start 3.0 Reboot to draw some conversation and controversy? Who do you think will be the first GM to win 3 titles? And, lastly will this being the only league that Lebron finally retires since it seems he is playing until he is 60 in real life? haha.
Yourkers: We have so many good gms but I will go with some of the ogs. Ucf, silver, rog, Slough, and dash. You could throw in so many others like Van who is always one to do it in the regular season but for some reason had shit luck in the playoffs. Then there's my guys Melo and Michael. Love their ability to build teams and love conversation with them. Spike, hunt(glad you're back), Carlos, Joseph, and another favorite HF. Man we have so many good gms that it makes it so excited. Best part is how easy the list is interchangeable and anyone can be in the top 5. Will be fun to see the rosters everyone gets. Could see some pics for talent and some for favorite players or team. So it will make everything change real quick.
Finish us off with who is your top 5 and which 2 teams do you expect to be in the first finals of nbn 3.0
Slough: It would be hard to vote against so many gm's and it likely will play out which teams get picked and how crazy trades will go with the classic teams going for it and some going for a rebuild to start. Not to mention with ratings lower, will be interesting on how the focus's will play out as well without the ratings inflated. I would expect UC, Silver, Yourkers, Rog, Joeballin, and Hunt. Will be fun for sure no matter how it turns out with how much interest and quickly the league filled up.
If I was a betting man, I would say based on teams the ECF will be the Bucks vs the Heat, with the Bucks making a run to the Finals. In the WCF it would be hard to not bet against the Warriors, then I think a toss up between the Kings, Nuggets, and the Grizz, however I think the Kings win in an upset and go on to Light The Beam in the new season!
