1. Okay, elephant in the room, give me your reasoning as to why you moved Wemby and why you felt it was necessary?
I believe there's no such thing as a player being unavailable. I was given an offer that, in my opinion, was insane, so I took it. I had not put together some sort of incredibly talented or deep team yet, I was probably a year or two away at best. Being handed the extreme amount of assets, especially picks with future potential, just means that I'll be able to have more fun with drafting and building an even better young team. Sure, maybe none of the players drafted are as good as Wemby right now. However, I expect to have multiple shots in the lottery -- if for example, I would have been able to add Flagg this season it would have already started looking a lot better. We'll just have to see how my drafting plays out, based on where I picked this season at the end of the lottery and then the mid-first, I was extremely pleased with what I walked away with.
2. Tahaad Pettiford looks to have had a nice TC. What’s his ceiling and where do you think he fits into this team 5 years down the line?
Yeah, I absolutely loved his scouts, I'm surprised he was available when I picked. He had a pretty solid training camp! I don't think his scoring increased letter grade wise but everything else went up which is interesting, especially the rebounding going up as a point guard. He's another young prospect that I look forward to seeing how he develops, especially when I start investing in his scoring. I think he'll be on this team getting a very large contract in five years.
3. What was your reasoning for taking Justin Edwards in last year’s draft? Were there any other players you were eyeing and do you have any regrets with Edwards?
At that point in the draft I felt fine with taking a boom or bust type prospect at such a weak position in the league. I had looked into a few players including Collier, who has had some incredible growth. It looks like he probably should have been the pick, but based on his scouts there was a chance he wouldn't have exploded like he did. I felt like Edwards had a higher ceiling with his position, so I took him instead. I also have no regrets with Edwards, I would make the same pick. I still have to super camp him and I believe he'll at least be a starter for years to come. If he has a rough training camp along the way or something and just dies, I suppose he could always be adept'd into being a great 2/3 backup. I'm under the impression that he's my starting future small forward for the next few years.
4. You have 3 potentially lotto picks in this upcoming draft. What position or type of players will you be looking to add to the roster?
This is the part that excited me from making the Wemby trade, even if one or both of the other picks somehow fall out of the lottery, I'll still be happy with my own top-5 pick and then two in the top~18 probably. So far I've drafted 8, 10, 15 and I'm really happy with all three of the players on the roster. So I doesn't really matter. I'll pick where I end up and I'll use them on the best players or ones with high upside, we will figure it out later . I'll need another big and another guard at some point, it just depends on who is available where.
5. If you could take one player off anyone else’s roster, regardless of position, who would it be and why?
Probably Maxey, he's insane. We all love the incredible point guards, he's young, extremely efficient from everywhere while putting up loads of points, tons of assists, he doesn't turn the ball over. He's going to be an all-league player for a long time and will probably win a few more MVPs. Think how many firsts I could trade him for .
6. 2 seasons into the new league, what’s your thoughts on NBN being back? What’s the one thing that you missed the most while we were in our hiatus? What’s one thing you hope to see as we move forward?
It's been a lot of fun. I've liked that the camps have been tuned down and it appears like the drafts are going to keep the league in check this time around. I missed being able to chat with all of the guys that used to be in the first league I was a part of with Rog. Going forward I just hope we can find / recruit / bring back other older GMs to keep the league full and active.
7. Give me your thoughts on the contracts that we currently have throughout the league? In your opinion, is cap space as important as it used to be with the contracts that are being thrown around?
I feel like the cap is sort of broken and it allows for weird contracts especially right now. We have increased the overall cap to kind of follow real life while the game leaves things like LLE, MLE, and draft pick value the same as it used to be with the lower number. So as these players who were on bad contracts or weird rookie deals fall off the file then people have an increase in free money. Maybe it'll balance itself out in a few seasons, I'm not sure. It just feels weird right now we have Wemby is making over 13M a year (in 3y) because he was the #1 pick but now Flagg who was just the #1 is going to making 3M in that 3rd season. Part of me wishes we just played with the old cap number so draft picks and mle would account for a larger percentage. There would be less available money which I don't know if that's a good thing but it would probably be more interesting? In my opinion?
8. With the lack of inflation currently throughout the league, what is one position that you think is the most valuable to build your team around and why?
I think small forward, if you can have a really elite one, can put your team at a different level. The Thunder for example getting Tatum last year was huge for their jump. He was averaging nearly 30/8/3 on 50/80/45 while most SFs in the league feel like if you're getting double digits it's a bit of a success story. I only feel like that right now instead of the usual PGs win everything mindset because of how flooded that position is. Perhaps I have an unusual take here, I can't wait to find out.
9. Whether or not you have had any draft picks yet, what’s your thoughts on the 2 drafts we have had? Along the same lines, would you like to see more notes going forward?
Notes are fun, I think it's fine how it is, I don't want to many or to have ones that are too overpowered. If the goal is to keep inflation down then that's one way to help keep it in check. I feel like the two drafts have been very interesting and a lot of fun. Some high boom or bust, some really good top picks and then just some overall good solid role players. Not everybody needs to turn into some star player.
10. What’s your honest opinion on interim GMs? Do you think it’s a downfall of the league or leagues can continue with a handful of GMs overseeing 2 teams?
I think it's just a short-term thing and that I don't really see any way around it. There's no waitlist and people aren't bringing in new GMs right now. Is the other option really so much better? Just have the team sit there GM-less and fall apart? If someone can help it coast or put a team in a better position for the person who is going to be taking over then I think that's good. They should be able to camp the players and resign their guys. Should interims be making large trades though, signing massive FA deals or sending out the best players for picks? I'm not entirely sure -- especially when they still might not have a GM when the picks are realized, if that makes any sense. I'm not sure.
