1. You have had some serious success 2 years into the new league with a team that many did not think would be able to. Talk us through that and why you've been able to win so many games?
For the most part I am good at DC's and seeing what works and building around a strategy to make it happen. I saw the potential in the team I chose and then was key to make a big move for a PG I felt could take the next step to start the league in Brunson. I think one thing I had based on some scouts was the ability to camp and see the potential in Murphy as well. Not to mention I am usually good at finding underrated talent I can afford to build around. Sure I have looked to improve SG every year, but been tough, but one thing the team always does well is have low turnovers and good FG% which makes for a tough team to beat.
2. You seem to be the master of creating the perfect depth chart for your roster. What goes into you figuring out which lineups and settings work best for your team?
Usually trying different lineups and strategies really. I don't mind trying things out for a few sims even if it could potentially cost me a few losses, but in the end it helps me long term put players in the right situations or trade for players I think would fit into the scheme that utilizes my team for run in the playoffs.
3. Trey Murphy III has turned into a really nice player after not playing much in year one. Where would you rank him among the other SFs throughout the league?
I would rank him very high. I think he is top 5 in my eyes. He might not be the volume scorer, but his efficiency is so good, very consistent, and I can run the ball through him with his low turnovers. He is actually scoring more this year at nearly 23ppg, his rebounding doesn't show high on ratings, but he is a 6.5-7rpg consistently, and usually less than 1.5tpg. Not to mention shoots high from the field, free throw, and 3pt every year. He ended up with 3rd all league last year and is on pace for his first ASW nod as well.
4. Zion Williamson is not your prototypical PF when you think about who you want to build around. Why do you think you've been able to hide his flaws so well and still win without him rebounding or defending at a high level?
Really just comes down to how efficient he is from the field and what he does without being an option. He just gets his own in any lineup I do without needing to be an option, which is key as I am a big fan of having a super sub be in my options off the bench. I think he is a bit better on defense and rebounding than the ratings show, but i'm good at masking it with other depth in the front court and backcourt across the team. I am a firm believer you need 8 strong on a team to be competitive in any season and I usually have that and more.
5. My guy Jalen Brunson does not have the accolades like some of these other PGs, but just puts up serious numbers. What makes him so special here in this league?
Yeah, with so many other pg's he isn't getting the ASW or awards at the end, but he just consistently puts up a ton of scoring. I think if he had more apg he would jump up and land some awards since that is how FBB likes it, but he is kind of more of just a scoring guard. I would love for his turnovers to be lower generally, but i'm ok with it since I have other players with lower than normal tpg, so its all about total team turnovers per game. He can take over a game at any moment in scoring, so he compliments Zion and Murphy very well with the 3-headed monster. I will say he gets more steals than what would look like with his defensive ratings which helps a lot as well.
6. 2 seasons into the new league, what’s your thoughts on NBN being back? What’s the one thing that you missed the most while we were in our hiatus? What’s one thing you hope to see as we move forward?
Its great to have it back and ran by Silver. Its nice to see a lot of the active, competitive gm's that I have played in the league with for awhile. Probably the most thing I missed is talking with a lot of the gm's like Yourkers, Rog, UC, Spike, Van, Melo, Charles, and the list goes on. A league is only as good as the activity gm's that are in it. Going forward just want it to be active, competitive, and for everyone to have fun.
7. Give me your thoughts on the contracts that we currently have throughout the league? In your opinion, is cap space as important as it used to be with the contracts that are being thrown around?
I think it’s important, it is different getting used to the higher soft and hard cap I will say. I think that the main reason it seems its not as important at the moment because nobody is used to the higher cap is all, but once people get used to it, its extremely important still though.
8. With the lack of inflation currently throughout the league, what is one position that you think is the most valuable to build your team around and why?
Probably still PG, but I think if you can gain a top SG or SF, that would be ideal, as there are more pg's to find throughout the league. I like that there isn't a ton of inflation yet so teams can run different offenses and bigmen are actually winning awards as well.
9. Whether or not you have had any draft picks yet, what’s your thoughts on the 2 drafts we have had? Along the same lines, would you like to see more notes going forward?
I think the drafts are solid and there has been some solid guys late. I'm a big fan of getting players late in drafts as you see with Kaldbrenner and Mintz. So I have been in the draft, just only 2nd rounders haha. I think the draft notes are fine for now. You don't want too many notes and too little, but you have to get to a nice balance so its not overstating a ton of players or undervaluing some of the top talents at the top of the draft.
10. What’s your honest opinion on interim GMs? Do you think it’s a downfall of the league or leagues can continue with a handful of GMs overseeing 2 teams?
I don't mind interim gm's, it is weird seeing so many trades and moves with them, so hard to see who is which gm sometimes haha. I do think its important to keep teams available for when new gm's come in and they aren't just complete shit, plus other teams not just running through the league so its a top 10 gm's and bottom teams with no gm's.
