1. How come you decided to trade Brandon Miller last season? Seemed like he was just a few TCs and camps away from turning into a really nice player.
To be honest, I was not sold on him ever becoming what everyone expected him to become. His offensive ratings are pretty solid and it seems like he should be able to score with the best SFs in the league. I’ve never had a great small forward that I have built up as a rookie, so I thought I was doing something wrong and I was starting to wonder if I would get him to where he needed to be. Then Raptors reached out with a trade to get me a small forward who was doing what I needed Miller to do. Barrett is a true second option to Lamelo. If I had Barrett, when I had Rozier and Ball, I probably would have the scoring that I needed. That trade also brought me Fultz and Holmes, so I received three players that could either start or become big parts of the rotation and solidify the lineup heading into the playoffs. Unfortunately, I truly screwed myself with the depth charts in the playoffs and we lost in the first round.
2. Tyler Smith and Tyrese Proctor both look like decent young players after their first TC. What do you expect to get out of them over the next couple of seasons?
I unfortunately misread the draft note with Smith, so I will not be able to take advantage of it. He has a very interesting skill set for a player that is just under 7 feet tall. For now, he may not play as much. He does have some deficiencies in his game, which make it difficult to play him in the post for a playoff team. If he is able to improve a bit in those areas, he would become the perfect stretch 4. He is a better shooter than some of the guards and small forwards that I scouted in the draft. Proctor will get some playing time. I really wanted to use him as a backup from the 1-3. I also drafted him as potentially a SG option if Russell left in free agency. I want to take advantage of his draft note, so I will look to him more playing time against the Bucks, Rockets, Spurs and yourself. It will be hard to get him to win those matchups since those other players seem to be in positions to start, but I need to try to take advantage of it. He could definitely develop into a starting shooting guard or potentially start at point guard, if I start Lamelo elsewhere to take advantage of other matchups.
3. Where do you rank LaMelo among the other top PGs around the league and why?
Can we remove turnovers from the equation? I think he’s top five, for sure. He is possibly the best passer of the bunch. He might be the best shooter of the group. He can hold his own when it comes to scoring and he is probably the second best rebounder of the group. The only issue is that turnovers. I think if you take out the turnovers, you could argue he is up there with Maxey, but unfortunately, you cannot do that, so I would have Maxey #1 and then you could take your pick from there depending on what you want your point guard to do. There are probably 3 or 4 guys that you can make an argument for #2 and Lamelo is one of them.
4. You have 3 point guards in a league where the position is tough to find. Are you holding them hostage or what’s your thought process on how they fit into your team?
I would be open to moving two of them if I find the right deal. Unfortunately, shooting guards are also tough to find. For now, I will probably start Russell at shooting guard, where he shot very well last year and see if I can find another scorer if he doesn’t work out.
5. You ended last season pretty hot, but do you think your roster has enough scoring to keep up with the big dogs? If not, will you look to address that early on this season?
I’ve ended the last two seasons pretty hot. This year’s schedule looks a bit tougher near the end of the season, but hopefully, we can end strong for a third season. In terms of scoring, I think I have a solid scoring punch off the bench, but definitely need more scoring in the starting lineup.
I’m hoping Barrett can offer a real 1-2 punch with Lamelo. He averaged over 20 points per game last season, but I wasn’t able to find the right settings to get them to work well together.
6. 2 seasons into the new league, what’s your thoughts on NBN being back? What’s the one thing that you missed the most while we were in our hiatus? What’s one thing you hope to see as we move forward?
I liked the Basketball GM version of the league more than a lot of others did, but I’m really glad that we are back and with FBB. At this point, most of us have been doing these leagues for over a decade, some over 20 years. I missed having the group back. I missed having the league to talk to with my brother. We both joined FBB leagues around 2004/2005, so it’s great having it back. You can ask him how much I tried to convince him to join V1. I would tell him about Kenneth Faried, Montrezl Harrell and the G-League plans that I would have to see if he would join, but he never bit until version 2. With that said, I would love the G-League back, but I know that was a lot of work, so silver may not have time for that. Mostly, I would like to see some of the former GMs return.(Get Bigthunder back, silver)
7. Give me your thoughts on the contracts that we currently have throughout the league? In your opinion, is cap space as important as it used to be with the contracts that are being thrown around?
I’ve always thought some of the contracts thrown around are a bit ridiculous in most sim leagues. I think it’s just the way things work in this game. In real life, teams have an idea of what other teams are offering, but in sim leagues, we throw out blind offers and hope for the best. Some people will always value someone more than everyone else in the league does. I think cap space is always going to be important, because someone will go over the hard cap or risk going over and then you can take advantage of that and either get a good player for cheap or possibly get a nice chunk of cash or a pick to help them get out of the hole
8. With the lack of inflation currently throughout the league, what is one position that you think is the most valuable to build your team around and why?
I think it is point guard. In three versions of this league, I’ve been lucky in getting three top of the line point guards. I had Dennis Smith Jr in V1, Killian Hayes in V2, and now Lamelo in V3. I think you need a top of the line point guard to compete in most cases. There are some outliers, but usually there is one on most great teams in FBB.
9. Whether or not you have had any draft picks yet, what’s your thoughts on the 2 drafts we have had? Along the same lines, would you like to see more notes going forward?
I think everyone’s favorite part of the leagues are the draft, so I can see why some people have been upset with their picks not going well. The game is tough. We have all had picks go incredibly well and others go south. I’ve liked the two drafts so far. We have seen two years in a row where everyone is trying to trade into the back half of the 1st round. They have been fairly deep drafts. I think I would have to see how the ratings have gone from one TC to the other to really see if the players are busts. Carrington is putting up similar stats from last year. Maybe his individual ratings only diminished slightly after training camp, although obviously you would expect the 5th overall pick to keep improving. I don’t blame van for being upset, but hopefully, it was just a slight dip in ratings and Carrington will improve in the long run.
10. What’s your honest opinion on interim GMs? Do you think it’s a downfall of the league or leagues can continue with a handful of GMs overseeing 2 teams?
I think we would all rather have a full league of GMs and hopefully guys like PJ, John, afro and frosty, heatflash return at some point. I think I like the current set up with the interims where we can make trades, but they have to be approved and we can earn some cash, as well. Being the interim is not exactly easy. With your own team, you can basically do about anything you want, but with the interim moves being scrutinized more, it makes it difficult to want to do certain things. You want to keep the team as viable for someone else to want to take them when they look at the open teams.
