1. First and foremost, I have to ask, did you ever debate offering that deal to Bam or was it always going to happen to ensure you resigned him?
When I thought of how heat culture works - you trade for overpriced veterans, make sure you handsomely pay your guys market or above market value, and grind out 2nd round picks into role players, I thought that I would want to wholeheartedly approach that in this sim league. I wanted Siakam because I thought that I could make him a super sub, but unfortunately right now he's being asked to start. I was really eyeing him to break out this year with my old man camps, I knew I needed around 4k this season between lux tax and the camps for Siakam and Davis, but plans are now completely torpedoed by the injury. Regardless, Bam was getting a full supermax no matter what. It's how I thought I could best honor heat culture.
2. You have chose to ignore the PG/SG/SF positions early on in your tenure. What's your thoughts behind this approach?
Honestly, fuck the FBB meta of stocks bigs, very fast outside. You want to have a real challenge in FBB? Try winning with shit that other people haven't figured out yet or haven't won with yet. Granted, it might be harder in this file, but I'm going to try my damnest to break through with something else. I've had an idea floating around for years now about how passing can actually be used in FBB, so I'm going to wholeheartedly embrace the concept with that combined with an inside offense. For this league and this file, my vow is to try to win with inside and passing.
3. You will finally have your first round pick next season. What will you be looking to do with that pick? Going into a rebuild, retool, or using it to acquire more pieces to put aside Bam and AD.
Ideally I sell it for cash to continue my camping spree, but I don't mind drafting someone that I really want if I think they can help me achieve my goals. I'm looking for very specific, niche type players here, but I do need one inside based scorer to focus and drag my team to where it needs to be. That pick is just a tool to help me find the player, through draft, trading, or turning into a different asset to help me build another player that I've targeted as someone I want to experiment with.
4. Walk me through your 3 PG starting lineup and why you think it could be successful?
Basically, I'm just trying to move the ball around and generate quality shots. Passing has been, in my opinion, an underexplored and underappreciated avenue here, whereas I think handling and turnovers are overrated - don't get me wrong, you want to keep them in check, and you can't win if they are excessive, but I don't mind having one or two really turnover prone players if I think they are net positives in other ways on a possession basis. I don't want to be an outlier turnover team, but I also don't want to be a team that decides a player is not worth it because of turnovers. I also think that scoring guards are hard to stop in this file, which is kinda boring tbh, so I want to see if I can try using the non-scoring guards and leveraging their ratings to build something different.
5. If you could add any player in the league to your roster right now, who would it be and why?
I wouldn't mind having Ben Simmons as a role player for me, or Zion to be a pure generator of the inside offense since he is an engine that is stronger than Bam or AD as an individual scorer. I think I'd also like to have some of the better pure passers in this file, so Taran Armstrong would be cool, or even Craig Porter Jr.
6. Heading into season 4, the Sixers will be looking for a three peat, which has only happened once, dating back to the original NBN. If there is 1 team out there who can take the defending champs down, who is it and why?
I'm going to go with players instead of teams, to be honest. I think it's Victor Wembanyama, Zion Williamson, De'Aaron Fox, and LaMelo Ball. If you have those four guys, I think you have a shot. Otherwise, you need a ton of other quality guys because the Sixers are so deep. Some of their guys on the bench would start for other teams easily. I think you need a transcendent superstar to stop them, and so if you can collect two of them you have a shot. The sixers have maxey and embiid, so you need at least 2 in return.
7. We've seen some top prospects struggle early on since the league has restarted, especially after some rough training camps. What are your thoughts on how the draft classes have looked on the court? Is the lack of success a product of the drafts or the randomness of FBB?
100% the randomness of FBB. That's why we play this game and why we love it. I've seen some other indexes where it looks like Wemby is a bust, and I love it when someone blows up out of nowhere, like if Stephen Jackson, Gilbert Arenas, or even Joe Johnson become 150% better than they were IRL. It's also cool to see some big names bust like VC, T-Mac, Ja, which I've seen in some leagues as well. You can sim the same file with the same GMs multiple times, and get a different result.
8. We have not seen the worst regular season team be gifted the number 1 pick in the draft so far. Do you think there's to say that maybe full on tanking isn't necessary or even worth it with the way our lotteries have fallen so far?
Honestly, good. I hate full on tanking and how badly it skews the trade market in sim leagues. The race to the bottom and blatant tanking is awful and I love leagues that don't reward it. The less we encourage tanking, the healthier the league is. I hope that no one here ever gets the first pick with the worst record. Horrendous.
9. There has been some discussion about potentially bringing PED camps back to the league. What's your thoughts on a) the camp itself and b) would it immediately lead to a more inflated league? Would there be a way we could introduce it that would be beneficial to the health of the league?
No. Please no. I think PEDs were bad to track, is stupid on the trading side, and I hate most camps in general outside of development camps like d-league where you have to sit out your prospects. I do not want higher ratings in this league, and the thought of it coming back terrifies me. I would love to encourage more developmental camps and discourage camps like PEDs and secret hidden camps.
10. Bam Adebayo was given a max deal that will pay him over 70 mil in his last year. With where a player has to be experience wise to be given a contract like this, can you foresee any players that are worth 70 million in the future? Who and why?
Yes. I think if you want the best players, unless you get lucky, you will have to shell out the big bucks. I think that you can even try to trade them near the end as a pure gamble with your future picks if you want to go all in on something and don't mind giving away potentially super good picks. I would without hesitation give the big bucks to Zion, Maxey, and Wembanyama, and maybe a few others if I studied the file more for the top end guys and not the bottom end guys that I prefer to develop. I think that you will need someone to take up that much of your cap if you want to win, most likely.
