1. We have not seen a three peat since the original NBN. What will your team need to do this season to ensure that your team wins 3 straight championships?
I think we'd need to win the championship. It's gonna be tough with how strong the top of the East is. I think I'll have to play with my depth chart a little this year to find the right mix since the start of the season hasn't been as good as strong as past years. Overall, I think we're in a solid spot but will need some tweaks.
2. You chose to trade for Desmond Bane this offseason after a rough year with Memphis. Why do you think that was the right move and why do you believe Vassell can carry the load the small forward position?
I didn't really think he had a rough year, just less playing time and a smaller role. He still had similar percentages as prior years and I thought he could replace what I lost in Ingram. I wanted to bring BI back but once he left, Bane was a solid replacement and the best player I could get for what I gave up. Helps that I got really lucky with TC.
Vassell and Bane were both solid rebounders and defenders at their position and both are great shooters. BI gave me 17 & 6 last year and both Bane and Vassell had averaged over 6 RPG in past seasons while both are better defenders. Neither is as dangerous a scorer as Ingram can be, but that ability was kind of wasted as a third option behind Embiid and Maxey so I thought it was a solid change. They're giving me the rebounding and steals I wanted but Vassell's scoring has been rough to start the year.
3. De'Aaron Fox got hurt game 1 in the finals last season. Although you were the heavy favorites, do you believe that series would have ended differently if he were to be healthy? Why or why not.
I still would've liked my team to win the series but Fox would've made it really interesting. He got snubbed for the All-League teams and had an argument for the best season in the league. He had the Kings competing with us for the top seed all season long and had a really good Game 1, outscoring Maxey, so it would've been close.
4. If Joel Embiid offers to resign with you at a max, would you accept that deal given his age? If not, what would you be comfortable bringing him back at?
At 33 years old, I don't think I could take him at a 6 year max. I'm comfortable giving him the max on a shorter deal, probably like 3 years, and hoping he re-signs. A 6 year max would basically kill any roster flexibility going into Maxey's prime years.
5. If you absolutely had to trade Tyrese Maxey, what player would you look for in return that could help maintain your level of success in the league?
With my current team setup, I think the best replacement would be Tyrese Haliburton. I think Maxey is a better scorer but Haliburton can replace or improve the playmaking and be a defensive upgrade. I have enough scoring to replace anything lost. Outside of him, I think someone like Wemby or Flagg would be fun to build around. I'd have to change the team build, but pairing them with Embiid would give me the best front-court in the league and keep me competing for a long time.
6. Heading into season 4, the Sixers will be looking for a three peat, which has only happened once, dating back to the original NBN. If there is 1 team out there who can take the defending champs down, who is it and why?
I think the biggest competition right now is the Raptors. They gave me a really close series in the Conference Finals last year and added Brunson to that team, which I think makes them really dangerous. The Wizards are also off to a great start and look to be really dangerous but I want to see them maintain it the whole season. Out West, the Grizzlies are really good at my weakest positions with Zion and Barnes leading their team. I think those are the biggest threats right now.
7. We've seen some top prospects struggle early on since the league has restarted, especially after some rough training camps. What are your thoughts on how the draft classes have looked on the court? Is the lack of success a product of the drafts or the randomness of FBB?
I think we've had a decent mix of superstars, solid players, and busts. Guys like Collier, Flagg and Carrington look like they'll be the next superstars of the league. Others like Wagner, Pettiford, and Sarr look like they could be future All-Stars. Granted, I haven't paid as close attention to the drafts as normal since I've yet to use any picks and I joined V2 when we were already on historical classes but I think the variability is mostly down to these being high school prospects instead of the known legends we were drafting last time around.
8. We have not seen the worst regular season team be gifted the number 1 pick in the draft so far. Do you think there's to say that maybe full on tanking isn't necessary or even worth it with the way our lotteries have fallen so far?
I still think the easiest way to build a championship team is through a full rebuild. While you may not get the #1, you're still likely to get a top pick which you can either use on one of the top prospects or flip for valuable veterans. I want to try to stay away from full rebuilds this time around and go the Silver route of consistent contenders to see how long I can sustain it but I think the full rebuild to championship playbook is pretty well defined and works.
9. There has been some discussion about potentially bringing PED camps back to the league. What's your thoughts on a) the camp itself and b) would it immediately lead to a more inflated league? Would there be a way we could introduce it that would be beneficial to the health of the league?
I loved PED camps in the last version but it definitely does contribute to league inflation. I think if we added some stipulations like the resurgence camps where a player has to have certain amount of experience and be under certain minutes played so it's just a way to build viable depth vs inflating already good players could be interesting. I used to PED all my rookie contract guys when I was tanking because there was no consequence since I didn't really care if they got suspended and lost me more games. That was probably taking advantage of the idea behind the camp.
10. Bam Adebayo was given a max deal that will pay him over 70 mil in his last year. With where a player has to be experience wise to be given a contract like this, can you foresee any players that are worth 70 million in the future? Who and why?
I didn't like that Bam contract at all since I don't think he's the best or even 2nd best C in the league and the Heat already had $100M tied up in their big men. I don't really see any reason to offer the 6 year 12.5% max when you can just go 5 years, 11% and you beat every other possible offer.
I'm not opposed to giving $70M to an undisputed best player at their position. Guys like Maxey, Wemby, Flagg all look like future candidates. If you have some rookie contract contributors or value contract veterans, it shouldn't be too hard to build a competitive roster around it. Embiid makes almost $60M and I have 2 other guys at $40M in the lineup with no really cheap contracts and it seems to be working out alright.
