1. You sent some massive contracts out this offseason and seemed to have instant regret, moving Embiid almost immediately and trying your best to pawn off Miller on anyone. What was your thought process on handing out those deals if you were going to try and move them right away?
Honestly, when I got Embiid, I never thought I'd be able to acquire Franz Wagner and at the time just really needed an SF. Trading Embiid + Dort for Franz really helped my future and made my roster better than last years. I didn't know the exact number I needed to offer Brandon so I just maxed him oh well. I love a challenge anyway, thats why I trade away all my firsts.
2. Over your first couple of seasons, you have prioritized and hit on some young bigs in the draft. Why are those the type of players you're aiming for in the offseason?
If I see a big with high rebounding and/or defense or has an interesting note I'm gonna take them, especially if they are 7'2. I love some tall centers that can defend inside and block the ball. I've always had fun building around a bunch of big defenders. Also, you can't really say I only prioritized bigs because I also was able to acquire DJ Wagner, Dwyane Aristode, and Alex Toohey through draft. Even though I have so many prospects that I drafted myself in Wagner, Aristode, Toohey, Rocco, Mara, Staton, I've actually tanked only 1 season.
3. In the offseason with your GMOY award, you elected to extend Wagner instead of cutting a year off that Miller deal. Why?
It was actually an easy choice. Taking only 1 year off of Millers contract isn't really going to help me. What's going to help me is keeping DJ Wagner an extra year. I didn't want to have to resign both Mara and Wagner in the same season. If I really have to I will move Franz when it becomes to difficult to manage, Brandon put up near similar numbers while playing with 2 30PPG players anyway.
4. Wagner and Mitchell are 2 elite scorers, but the rest of the team is average on the offensive end. Will you look to upgrade that as the season goes along?
I feel like I have tried to upgrade around them each season. Added Franz Wagner this year but I'm not sure theres an SF that will average 20 while playing with my 2 30PPG players. I feel like Franz should but they just shoot way too much. I think with the new DC changes we will figure it out going further.
5. You have moved all of your picks for the foreseeable future. What was your reasoning to get rid of all of them and do you have any regrets?
I always trade away my picks as they really hold no value unless they are in my hand. I have only tanked once in 5 seasons and don't plan on it for a while. Even if DJ Wagner/Aday Mara leave me in FA I believe I still have enough pieces to build a team without them. As good as we are right now we still do not have our best prospect Dwyane Aristode in his full form, plus Rocco who looks amazing already in his second season isnt in full form either. The future is bright in New York with or without our picks.
6. It seems like we have over half of the league not actively trying to compete. This has always been an issue, but can you think of a way to incentivize teams to try and win a bit more?
Like you said, this happens always in every league. I feel when I used the real life draft thats being used IRL right now it really really made it really difficult for teams tanking for the top 3 picks in the draft and teams in the middle were benefitting more. It was a lot more random and saw a lot more 6-7-8-9 jumping into the top 5 very often while 1-2 would drop 5-6. I feel if tanking was so hard it would remove so many teams trying to tank.
7. There have been some huge trades since the start of the new league that have netted 6, 7, or 8 firsts for a player. Do you think the value of a first rounder has decreased or are teams just star hunting while inflation hasn't kicked in yet?
I believe the inflation is just really down right now that the starts really show themselves way more than others. It's harder to find allstars at SG or SF or PF at all right now and people feel if they are gonna acquire one of these stars they have to give everything they got. I was just happy to get 3 firsts in the first season for Jalen Brunson. Right now though people are not giving any value to very good bigs and I don't get it. Teams scared to move 2 1sts for a very young great Center just seems bonkers to me.
8. PGs still reign supreme in FBB's eyes, but the value of a big man has stayed super high with the new league. If you had to choose between a guy like Tyrese Maxey or Victor Wembanyama to start your team with, who would it be and why?
I said it two times before and I'll say it a third, 100% Victor Wembanyama. If I could get my hands on him I would immediately. It’s really hard to find bigs at age 23 that average 22/15 and 4 stocks as a non option. Its also really hard to build a Center like Wemby through camps while its a lot easier to build and camp a guard. I wish Mara or Rocco had any chance to be anywhere close to as good as Wemby and I know it'll never happen.
9. All of the top rookies had pretty good TCs to start their careers. With your current roster build, if you could take any rookie off another team, who would it be and why?
Ooo this is a good question. I'm assuming Rookie from this past draft, I'm gonna go with Jared McCain. I really wanted him during the draft and felt he would have been the perfect replacement for Donovan whos getting old. I don't really see him being better than Donovan right now as he is also a low assists, high turnover player but getting an extra 8 years of Donovan woulda been lovely. Other than that I feel like the only position my team lacks in is PF but there were no good PFs in this last draft.
