1. You're sitting atop the West again. Sell me on why your team has enough to get over the hump this season.
I think my starting 5 is as good as it’s been during my last 3 seasons and I thought I had enough each season. My starting 5 fits together really well and really excels at rebounding which is my top priority. The bench is a little weak, but all of my starters have played big minutes so far and hopefully that continues in the playoffs
2. Monte Leyva has finally taken the next step and is a reliable offensive player. Explain to everyone why you're so high on him.
I always get attached to a player early on and then fall in love (George Yardley, Ousmane Dieng). Leyva rebounding at SG is so unique and it’s the attribute I value most. Great handle, should be an elite shooter, good defender. I would love for him to me a Memphis lifer and hold the SG rebounding record
3. Zion has had his 2 best seasons in Memphis. What have you done to unlock his true talent?
Slough just doesn’t know what he’s doing 😂. He’s taken some TC steps, but I’ve built the offense around him. Focusing on balanced offense and making him the #1 option. Normally I wouldn’t do that with a big but when he’s constantly shooting over 50% I think it makes sense. His increase in rebounding has really taken him to another level as well.
4. You don't rely on your bench as much as some other teams. Are you confident in those guys in an injury were to occur?
Kind of? I think JJJ could fill in pretty well at SG. I don’t know if he could be a full time starting SF. He’s really good as a backup 1-3. Bruno could start for a limited time (had to with Allen’s injury already). But I wouldn’t trust Bryant with major minutes. I like Simmons as a chess piece but not a big time player. I guess the answer is No unless it’s an area that JJJ could cover
5. You have some good young SFs on your roster. With Scottie's slight decline over the last few seasons, could we see a new SF in Memphis anytime soon?
Potentially. I really like both Wilkins and Mgbako. My team is about to get very expensive if I pay Leyva and don’t think it’s realistic to pay all 4. One of them is going to have to go and Barnes might make the most sense this offseason.
6. It seems like we have over half of the league not actively trying to compete. This has always been an issue, but can you think of a way to incentivize teams to try and win a bit more?
I can not. We can give more rewards to team that do compete. Right now the only thing you get from making playoffs is $200 in DC cash if you make first round. I think we could offer more rewards for playoff teams I guess? I think letting interim teams have a little more leeway to compete would be helpful as well. I’ve said it 100x but keep making the interim teams have to basically rebuild is going to really water down the league
7. There have been some huge trades since the start of the new league that have netted 6, 7, or 8 firsts for a player. Do you think the value of a first rounder has decreased or are teams just star hunting while inflation hasn't kicked in yet?
I think it’s mostly star hunting. I would still take 8 picks for Wemby every time. I don’t know if my 6 picks for SGA was good value. It really depends on the values of the first being sent. Most of the time they are all bad firsts in which case then it’s probably a bad deal. I’d rather 1 or 2 valuable firsts than 8 non-lotto picks
8. PGs still reign supreme in FBB's eyes, but the value of a big man has stayed super high with the new league. If you had to choose between a guy like Tyrese Maxey or Victor Wembanyama to start your team with, who would it be and why?
Im taking Wemby because he’s so unique. Maxey is amazing but there’s 5 or so other elite PGs in the league too. At his peak there’s maybe only 1 other player (Flagg?) that will be able to do what Wemby can do
9. All of the top rookies had pretty good TCs to start their careers. With your current roster build, if you could take any rookie off another team, who would it be and why?
I think it’s gotta be AJ. He’s already a stud as a 19y rookie. You can be set at the position for the next 12 seasons without worry.
10. Give me your East winner, West winner, and Champsionship winner predicitons half way through the season?
WIZARDS! GRIZZLIES! And I put an end to Dash
