So here we are 4 weeks into the season , and the Cavs sit at 5-6 looking from the playoffs from the Outside in.
A few things havent gone the way that the Brass of the team has expected. Putting in alot of work during the Offseason with Veteran Brandon Ingram , Jalan Haralson looked like it was paying dividends for the team in the Preseason. he averaged almost 17 points a game and his shots increased substantially.
Fast Forward to the Regular season , and Haralson looks like the same player that he was last season, not putting up many shots , not a factor at all offensively , and his defense has lagged also this year . He was starting and putting up just awful splits .295/ .632 /.231 , those kinds of numbers just dont cut it for a backup , let alone a starter in this league. Ingram has since replaced Haralson in the starting lineup , and has seemed to give the team a spark offensively which it undoubtably needed to say the least. Another Area which seems like a sore thumb for the Cavs, the Center position. Losing Harry Giles , and Joseph Tugler during Free agency had the team scrambling for replacements. Starting Center Hartenstein is still with the team, but his play has suffered dramatically , especially since the team went to a more fast paced offense compared to last season. The main Buckups that were signed , one in Free Agency
Onyeka Okongwu has put up decent numbers for a backup, but nothing that would compete with the Big Boys in the Eastern Conference front courts. they also signed undrafted rookie Robin Jones , hoping that he would bring some physicality to the team..that has yet to be seen.
Not Everything is in dire straights in Cleveland though, Young players Dylan Harper and Paolo Banchero are both fun to watch and can both score the Ball.
Perennial All Star PG Luka Doncic seems to be having one of his best seasons since coming into the league. The team will undoubtedly need to ride the coat tails of Doncic to will them into the Playoffs if no serious moves are made. Harper should help , the Youngster looks like the real deal, and seems to keep progressing and getting better since he has come into the league last season. To be frankly honest, part of the problem with the Cavs is GM/Coach Guins has not put the right starting five in my opinion onto the court to start the games. the small sample size of the first three weeks kind of have given Guins an epiphany into who should be his starting five. We will see how this eventually plays out in the Mistake by the Lake. Will the team make a bold move to solidify the roster? An upgrade in the front court is the most necessary move that needs targeted , as besides Banchero, this group of bigs would be hard pressed to compete with teams in the G-league.
Cleveland is used to disappointing its sports fan Base. Lets hope for Guins sake that he is not just another typical failure in Cleveland Cavalier lore.
