The Cavs had an end of a season Flurry to sneak into the playoffs as an 8th seed. That was helped by a 5-0 streak to end the season. This all led up to a first-round meeting with the #1 seeded New Orleans Pelicans (61-21). The Cavs surprisingly matched up well with the Pelicans , a tough series ended with a game 7 season ending Lose ...and now begins the long look into the offseason, and the way in which this team is headed.
The Cavs have a nice core of players in the back court that they can really build around. Luka Doncic was all 1st team All Defense and had a tremendous season to lead the team into the playoffs. Sophomore Dylan Harper had a 2nd straight solid season, even though he was flipping between SG and SF all year. The front office really likes the makeup and the versatility of this young man, and with his hard work expect him to keep taking the next step to becoming a solid 1 ,2 punch with Luka moving forward. Jalan Haralson is a bit of a head scratcher for the team. He has shown glimpses here and there of promise as what he could do as a starter when needed, but with his season ending injury, and the inconsistencies in his game, the team may be more apt to use Jalen as a 6th man then put him into the starting lineup permanently.
Taran Armstrong is a very capable backup that the team has under contract for 1 more season, the team likes his makeup as a veteran guard, but players like Arnstrong seem like a dime a dozen, so it still remains to be seen if he will be on the roster when next season rolls around.
Looking into the front court for the foreseeable future, looks of uncertainty and questions abound about the only player that is under contract for the upcoming season. Paolo Banchero was acquired to be a future cornerstone of the franchise. He really hasn't been the player that they expected when trading for the ultra-versatile big man. At times he seems overmatched down on the block, as he is undoubtedly more comfortable on the outside in, versus the typical old school back to the basket Forward that was the norm in the old school NBA. Banchero may be more valuable to the team settling in as a super 6 type player. That will all certainly depend on which players the Cavs can bring back and or lure to the team during the busy Free Agent period. The front office will certainly look into all alleys into improving the team, whether it be with the aforementioned Free Agency Period, a trade, or through the draft, which by the way the team has no first round pick this or next season as of now.
The Free Agency and resigning period will be a interesting time with the teams future in mind. 3 important players that the Cavs traded for during the season all are hitting the free agent market, not yet sure during talks with those players agents if one or any of the three will offer to resign with the team on a contract that would make both parties happy. Bigs Rudy Gobert and Jakob Poeltl really jumped started the team into the playoff picture upon each players arrival to Cleveland. They certainly solidified that lack of physical and defensive presence that the team lacked nearly the entire 1st half of the season. Resigning them would definitely help in the configuration of the roster for the upcoming season. Malik Monk added scoring that was given up when the team dealt away veteran Small Forward Brandon Ingram. Monk fit in well with the team at shooting guard, the team will certainly take a long look at bringing the Vet back if the price is right.
GM Guins has an idea of what he would like to do, and what type of team he needs to put on the court to be competitive in the ultra- competitive Eastern Conference. The work is just beginning for the GM, time will tell in what direction Guins thinks the team will be looking at. Always expect the unexpected here in the NBN..Competing is the name of the game ,but are the Cavs in position to keep climbing up the ranks, another 8th seed will certainly not be what the Front Office will be shooting for next season in Cleveland.
